About The Position

The Financial Counselor serves as a link between our patients and their funding options. The Financial Counselor is responsible for meeting with patients/guarantors who require assistance in seeking options for meeting their financial responsibility for payment of their hospital bills, including but not limited to; Community Financial Assistance, Disability, COBRA, Medicaid and Marketplace plans. The Financial Counselor is responsible for a broad spectrum of duties, beginning with initial patient contact, via the pre-admit/pre-registration functions and ending with the control and maintenance of the patient’s account until discharge. Within this range, the Financial Counselor is responsible for determining the financial status of the patient during the financial counseling process.

Requirements

  • Associates Degree and one to three years related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Prior experience in hospital medical billing, registration or healthcare related field
  • Comprehension of healthcare terminology
  • Knowledgeable about various insurance plans, including coverage and general billing requirements.
  • Time management skills to handle multiple, competing demands and priorities, and work effectively under pressure
  • Excellent communication (verbal and written) and organizational abilities. Excellent interpersonal skills are necessary in dealing with peers, internal and external customers
  • Must be comfortable operating in a collaborative, shared leadership environment
  • Ability to work independently as well as in a group
  • Excellent analysis and problem-solving skills
  • Demonstrated commitment to organizational mission with a “ whatever it takes” attitude to get the job done
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

Nice To Haves

  • IRF medical billing experience
  • Knowledge of ICD-10-CM and CPT coding classification systems

Responsibilities

  • Performs activities related to multiple patient types (Inpatient, Outpatient), distribution of patient information, and support coverage of other departmental roles. Frequent communications will occur with patients/family members/guarantors, 3rd party payers, local/governmental agencies, attorneys, employers and physicians/office staff. Internal contacts include, but are not limited to the PFS Inpatient Representatives, OP Benefit Specialists, IP/OP Utilization Review, and Care Management staff.
  • Conducts patient financial interviews to assist with the resolution of the patient’s account, and to ensure compliance with hospital financial resolution policies.
  • Recognizes and assists patients with Community Financial Assistance (CFA) applications as needed and completes charity processing for assigned patients
  • Assist patients with Medicaid paperwork, submission of Medicaid application and follow up
  • Follow up on all patients with pending Medicaid
  • Identify and assist patients for potential PIP and liability claims, obtain police reports as necessary
  • Identify and assist patients with completion of Michigan Assigned Claims Plan (MACP) application and follow up on submitted MACP applications
  • Issue termination of benefits, pending, or final denial letters for inpatient rehabilitation, advise patients of financial responsibility
  • Track patients admitted with COBRA coverage, assist if needed for continuation of coverage
  • Counsel uninsured patients on Marketplace coverage options through the Affordable Care Act
  • Inform patients on Medicare enrollment dates and how to enroll for those with no Medicare Part A or Part B or Part D coverage
  • Acts as a liaison with other departments of the hospital and off-site locations. Acts as a liaison for patients and the Patient Financial Services department
  • All other duties as assigned
  • Demonstrate excellent customer service and standards of behaviors as well as encourages, coaches, and monitors the same in team members. This individual should consistently promote teamwork and direct communication with co-workers and deal discretely and sensitively with confidential information.
  • Contribute by identifying problems and seeking solutions. Promote patient/family satisfaction where possible; participates in departmental efforts to monitor and report customer service.
