About The Position

Financial aid counselors are knowledgeable in all aspects of student financial aid administration. Work is generally diversified requiring judgement, analysis, and decision-making guided by established practices and procedures. Working within federal, state, and institutional policies and regulations, financial aid counselors will provide financial aid information and advising services to students and families. Other responsibilities include, but are not limited to, processing financial aid budget appeals and updates, award adjustments, professional judgments, satisfactory academic progress (SAP), verification, and financial aid presentations and outreach. Our professional staff provides personalized counseling and outreach to educate and empower all students to make higher education more accessible and to reach graduation. The Office of Financial Aid and Veteran Services plays an integral part in student recruitment and retention efforts and educating our students on financial awareness topics which helps support the University’s mission by preparing our students for a diverse and inclusive world. The office is under the umbrella of the University Communications and Marketing division at UW-Stevens Point.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience with working detail-oriented projects, counseling, finance, and/or education
  • High-quality verbal and written communication skills
  • Commitment to exemplary customer service
  • Demonstrated administrative skills including attention to detail and an ability to manage multiple priorities to meet established goals and objectives

Nice To Haves

  • 3 years of student financial aid counseling experience with the ability to apply advising approaches to diverse individual student situations
  • PeopleSoft experience
  • Demonstrated proficiency in preparing and delivering effective presentations
  • Working proficiency level in the knowledge of Title IV regulations governing federal student aid

Responsibilities

  • Awards financial aid to qualifying students
  • Audits financial aid applications for awarding financial aid to qualifying students according to established policies and in compliance with federal and state regulations
  • May hire, train, and supervise student employees
  • Serves as a point of contact to third party stakeholders about financial aid information and processes
  • Assists in collecting, preparing, and analyzing financial aid data for stakeholders
  • Triages processes or applications if issues arise
