About The Position

Are you interested in connecting the curiosity of the Greater Boston youth to the overwhelming beauty of nature all while educating them on scientific concepts? Would you like to facilitate outdoor activities in an inspiring, interactive, hands-on/minds-on, and culturally responsive way? T he Emerald Necklace Conservancy is hiring a team of up to three capable, enthusiastic educators to lead environmental education activities for Boston youth in the Emerald Necklace parks. The Field Trip Teacher will lead environmental field trips for Boston Public School classrooms in the Emerald Necklace parks. Canopy Classroom is a two-hour field trip program offered for Boston Public School's 3 rd and 4 th grade classrooms. Canopy Classroom is a place-based, environmental education program consistent with Boston Public Schools science curriculum standards to connect Boston youth to the natural world. The goal of the program is to guide students to become more environmentally conscious by highlighting the real-world applications of science and its relevance to their daily lives. Field t rips include fun, interactive nature connection activities in the Emerald Necklace.

Requirements

  • 1+ years of experience in facilitating outdoor nature connection and environmental education activities for youth
  • Experience as a camp counselor, Girl, or Boy Scout Leader, environmental education instructor/teacher, BA or BS in, environmental studies, biology earth science, or related experience
  • Ability to teach youth in an outdoor environment
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
  • Interest in natural history, nature connection, environmental education, and science education
  • Strong organizational, time management, oral, and written communication skills
  • Skills and ability to work with diverse groups, exercise cultural humility, and implement best practices in inclusion
  • Demonstrate a positive attitude while working on a team
  • Reliable transportation to transport teaching materials to and from activity locations
  • Proficiency in standard business software, such as Microsoft Office
  • Ability to work outdoors in a variety of weather conditions
  • Ability to lift 10-20 pounds
  • Current First Aid and CPR Certification
  • Employees must successfully complete a CORI and SORI Background Check

Nice To Haves

  • Fluency in English/Spanish/other languages is desirable
  • Preference given to candidates from the Boston community

Responsibilities

  • Work with Education staff at the Conservancy to prepare and facilitate interactive nature connection/environmental education activities in Emerald Necklace parks
  • Lead groups of 12-15 participants in hands-on outdoor nature-based learning experiences in the Emerald Necklace parks
  • Monitor program participants in all types of outdoor environments and ensure the safety and comfort of all participants
  • Maintain a professional work environment, which includes equipment cleanup and storage of program gear and materials
  • Provide basic first aid as needed
