About The Position

SUMMARY: The Field Supervisor oversees day-to-day EMS field operations during assigned shifts, ensuring crews operate safely, efficiently, and in compliance with established standards. This role provides on-scene leadership, supports field personnel in real time, and monitors system performance to maintain effective response and coverage. The Field Supervisor is responsible for reinforcing policies, addressing performance issues, and ensuring quality patient care and documentation. This position serves as the primary point of accountability in the field, bridging operational expectations with frontline execution. SPECIAL NOTE: This job has been designated as a Safety Sensitive Position by HCESD11. Public safety, as well as the safety of HCESD11 employees, requires that the employee in this position be able to always perform all essential functions at the highest levels. Therefore, this position is subject to frequent drug testing and requires reporting of all employee use of High-Risk Medications identified by HCESD11 and certification from the employee’s physician that such medications can be safely used while working. Because HCESD11 ’s ability to deliver emergency medical response depends on having a workforce that can be reliably scheduled, this job also requires regular and reliable attendance. This is a high-stress job that requires focus, engagement, and high performance in traumatic, physically demanding, emotionally charged, and life-threatening situations. The position involves exposure to serious and graphic injury to adults and children, including death and dismemberment. A high level of physical, mental, and emotional health is an essential requirement.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent
  • At least two (2) years’ experience as a paramedic in a progressive 911 system; Previous supervisory experience, preferred.
  • Current Paramedic certification or licensure in the State of Texas in good standing; completion of an accredited Paramedic program.
  • Current American Heart Association BLS, ACLS, and PALS certifications.
  • NIMS ICS-100, 200, 700, 800 required; ICS-300 and ICS-400 preferred
  • Valid Texas Driver’s License with an acceptable driving record.
  • Strong knowledge of Texas Administrative Code 157 and applicable EMS rules, regulations, and clinical standards.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead, make sound decisions, and remain calm in high-pressure, dynamic, and potentially life-threatening situations.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to enforce policies, build relationships, and interact with employees, partner agencies, and the public.
  • Ability to perform prolonged physical and mental tasks, maintain situational awareness, and operate effectively in stressful environments.
  • Basic computer proficiency and familiarity with electronic documentation systems; knowledge of local geography and roadways.
  • Must not be excluded from participation in federally funded healthcare programs (OIG).

Nice To Haves

  • Previous supervisory experience, preferred.
  • ICS-300 and ICS-400 preferred
  • SPO, MPO, FACPE, or other relevant credentialing preferred.
  • Additional requirements as determined by the Office of the Medical Director.

Responsibilities

  • Assumes full operational command of all EMS field activities during assigned shifts, with direct accountability for system performance, response readiness, and service delivery
  • Owns and actively manages key performance metrics, including response times, chute times, unit availability, documentation compliance, and clinical quality indicators; takes immediate action to address deficiencies.
  • Ensures continuous compliance with all departmental policies, clinical protocols, and applicable local, state, and federal regulations, including real-time enforcement and corrective action
  • Responds to and takes control of high-risk and high-impact incidents, providing decisive scene leadership, clinical oversight, and operational direction.
  • Controls system status, unit posting, and deployment in real time to meet performance expectations and maintain system coverage.
  • Actively monitors field operations through direct observation and response, immediately addressing performance issues, policy violations, and operational deficiencies.
  • Initiates and administers corrective and disciplinary actions in accordance with policy; recognizes and reinforces high performance.
  • Commands shift operations, including personnel readiness, unit availability, equipment accountability, and uniform compliance.
  • Conducts station and unit inspections, holding crews accountable for cleanliness, readiness, and regulatory compliance, including OSHA and controlled substance requirements.
  • Reviews, validates, and enforces accuracy and timeliness of all patient care documentation, shift reporting, and required records
  • Leads investigations into incidents, accidents, complaints, and variances in care or operations; determines root cause and implements corrective action.
  • Directs operations during major incidents, including MCIs and other large-scale events, ensuring appropriate resource allocation, communication, and scene control.
  • Maintains clinical competency and performs patient care as necessary to support crews and operational needs.
  • Maintains staffing and operational continuity by filling critical field roles as needed to sustain service levels.
  • Coordinates with communications, hospitals, and partner agencies to ensure aligned, effective, and professional service delivery.
  • Drives operational readiness by ensuring availability and functionality of vehicles, equipment, and supplies in coordination with support services.
  • Contributes to training, policy development, and continuous improvement efforts to strengthen field operations and system performance.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
