About The Position

This position will supervise crews who perform a variety of roadway maintenance activities on the State Road right of way. Requirements

  • Knowledge of department regulations, policies and procedures relating to highway maintenance operations.
  • Knowledge of Maintenance Management System (MMS) guidelines and production standards.
  • Skill in determining maintenance work priorities and organizing resources to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to interpret roadway design standards, maintenance rating standards, specifications and plans.
  • Ability to inspect completed maintenance projects to ensure quality products.
  • Ability to supervise others in the completion of routine maintenance activities.
  • Ability to communicate both verbally and in writing.
  • Must obtain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) – Advanced Level within one year and maintain it.
  • A valid Class “B” CDL (Commercial Driver’s License) with air brakes is required at time of hire.
  • Possess a valid Class (B) driver license with an acceptable driving record in accordance with the Department’s Driver’s Record Requirements Policy.
  • Register with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Drug and Alcohol (FMCSA) Clearinghouse.
  • Meet the qualifications outlined in Title 49 CFR Part 391.11.
  • Pass a mandatory drug screening.

Responsibilities

  • Supervises employees spending majority of their time communicating with, motivating, training, and evaluating employees, and planning and directing employees’ work.
  • Oversees crews performing maintenance activities.
  • Develops work schedule and assigns routine maintenance activities for the Department of Corrections (DOC) crews.
  • Issues daily work assignments to DOC officers and provides them with the appropriate tools, equipment and materials to complete assignments.
  • Performs field inspections to verify the quantity and quality of work completed.
  • Ensures work is performed in compliance with Standard Indexes and Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) policies and procedures.
  • Verifies FDOT and DOC crew’s production, work time, materials, equipment usage and locations are reported accurately on crew sheets.
  • Performs work need surveys and plans work based on priorities.
  • Submits planned work schedules to the Unit’s Maintenance Management System’s (MMS) Manager.
  • Coordinates with the MMS Manager to plan resources and unit goals for FDOT and DOC crews.
  • Performs minor operational maintenance and ensures that the proper periodic preventative maintenance schedule is performed in a timely manner and that equipment is kept in good working condition by coordinating with the local shop.
  • Ensures that FDOT and DOC crews are following procedures for equipment maintenance and inspections.
  • Respond to emergencies and be “on call” (24-hour duty) when necessary.
  • Operate a commercial motor vehicle (CMV), consistent with the type of commercial driver’s license (CDL).
  • Perform other CMV safety-sensitive functions.
  • Obtain certification in Temporary Traffic Control (Maintenance of Traffic) – Advanced Level within one year and maintain it.
  • Work with or around Department of Corrections inmates.
  • Adhere to the provisions and requirements of Section 215.422, Florida Statues (FS), related to State Comptroller’s rules and Department of Transportation (DOT) invoice processing and warrant distribution.
  • Be responsive to emergency situations within a short timeframe and serve on the Transportation Emergency Management Team.
