About The Position

The Field Operations Manager is a full-time role responsible for supporting the preparation, maintenance, and daily operations of the baseball field at ONT Field. Working closely with the Grounds Superintendent (Head Groundskeeper) and grounds crew, this hands-on position ensures the playing surface is safe, game-ready, and meets league standards for all events, including baseball games, practices, and special events. Ideal candidates will have an interest in sports turf management, facility operations, or a career in sports and entertainment venues.

Requirements

  • High school diploma required.
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Turfgrass Management, Agronomy, Horticulture, or certification (two-year program or higher preferred)
  • Minimum of 2–4 years of experience in sports turf or baseball field maintenance.
  • Prior experience supervising staff in a grounds or facilities environment preferred.
  • California Pesticide Applicator’s License or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire strongly preferred.
  • Strong leadership, organizational, and communication skills.
  • Ability to train, mentor, and motivate staff.
  • High attention to detail with a strong commitment to field safety and quality.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work, including lifting up to 75 lbs.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Valid driver’s license required.
  • Must be available for all Tower Buzzers home games, nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Availability to support special events and non-baseball activities as scheduled.
  • Tasks are performed with moderate supervision without assistance for 40% of the workday; tamping, stooping, bending and lifting at least 50 lbs.
  • Walking for long distances for more than 50% of workday.
  • This position may require work inside or outside of the building, as needed by events.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends and holidays, in addition to normal business hours.
  • Employees may be scheduled to work until 12:00am or later.
  • Must be able to pass background.
  • Employee should use precautions & follow safety guidelines.

Responsibilities

  • Field Preparation & Maintenance Lead and participate in all aspects of baseball field maintenance including mowing, infield and warning track maintenance, mound/plate/bullpen clay work, and pre- and post-game field preparation.
  • Ensure proper field marking using chalk and paint, including batter’s boxes, foul lines, logos, and coach’s boxes.
  • Maintain turf health through cultural practices such as mowing, edging, aerating, verticutting, watering, and dew whipping.
  • Ensure the playing surface meets PDL requirements, including field dimensions, slope, and overall safety standards.
  • Perform irrigation audits, troubleshooting, and minor system repairs.
  • Equipment Operation & Maintenance Safely operate and oversee the use of all field maintenance equipment including mowers, tractors, infield groomers, rollers, blowers, sweepers, utility vehicles, and sprayers.
  • Apply granular and liquid fertilizers and soil amendments in accordance with best practices and regulations.
  • Ensure all equipment is properly maintained, stored, and service-ready.
  • Game Day & Event Operations Lead setup and breakdown of batting practice, games, and on-field activities in coordination with team and league personnel.
  • Manage field conversions for non-baseball events including concerts, community events, and special programming.
  • Coordinate on-field logistics and transportation of materials using utility vehicles.
  • Tarp & Weather Response Monitor weather conditions and assist in decision-making related to tarp deployment and field protection.
  • Lead and coordinate tarp operations including full field tarps, bullpen tarps, and mound/plate covers.
  • Oversee post-rain recovery efforts to restore the field to safe, playable condition.
  • Leadership, Supervision & Administration Supervise, train, schedule, and evaluate seasonal and part-time grounds staff.
  • Assign daily work plans and ensure tasks are completed to established standards.
  • Assist with payroll processing for hourly grounds staff.
  • Participate in homestand and event planning meetings.
  • Assist with budgeting, purchasing, and inventory management of ground supplies.
  • Ensure all work and chemical applications comply with EPA, OSHA, and applicable state regulations.
  • Fulfill duties of the Grounds Superintendent in their absence, as needed.
