About The Position

With community residents leading the way, the mission of Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation (CHLDC) is to build a strong, sustainable Cypress Hills/East New York, where youth and adults achieve educational and economic success, secure healthy and affordable housing, and develop leadership skills to transform their lives and community. Cypress Hills Local Development Corporation has one (1) open position for a Full-time Farmer’s Market Manager in the United Community Centers Division for the East New York Farms program. The Farmer’s Market Manager role is to assist in widening access to whole foods in ENY while inspiring local residents to eat fresh, local and in season. The Market Manager will manage 2-3 farm stands at locations throughout the East New York area. They will act as ambassadors for the project and recruit vendors for our market sites. This position also requires a significant youth supervision component.

Requirements

  • 1-3 years experience in urban agriculture, youth development, and/or community building.
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a diverse community (people of different ages, abilities and cultural backgrounds).
  • Drivers License required.
  • Familiar and proficient with G-Suite (Google Drive, Sheets, Docs, Calendar, Gmail) and computer applications.

  • Bilingual English and Spanish or English and Bangla preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Manage Saturday Farmers’ Market setup and ensure daily market operations (EBT, redemption, cash exchange, and paperwork) are completed.
  • Complete appropriate paperwork with Street Activity Permit Office (SAPO), Farmers Market Nutrition Program (FMNP), Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Farmers Market Federation of New York (FMFNY).
  • Recruit, onboard, retain and support business owners and farmers/gardeners as vendors.
  • Manage and organize supplies and produce inventory, fix and order supplies as necessary; monitor for food safety.
  • Coordinate ENYF! Share Table by working with local community gardeners to grow and sell their produce at our farmers’ markets and manage weekly share table drop off with community gardeners.
  • Host vendor and Share Table gardener meetings throughout the season to set prices, review policies, and make collective decisions on Market protocols as needed.
  • Provide organizing and leadership development support to vendors by developing business resources and providing market training.
  • Manage partnerships with relevant stakeholders and keep records of all contacts.
  • 4-8 hours of on-the-ground outreach per week (from April-November)
  • Track and record all produce sold and financial data through the market season.
  • Collaborate with other staff members as necessary to schedule regular programming during the Market.
  • Train Market interns in the day-to-day tasks of running the farmers market (Customer Service, Market Set Up, organizing supplies, fixing market supplies, maintaining market storage areas, documentation, outreach, etc.) and conducting outreach.
  • Track interns' behaviors, achievements and areas for improvements using data tracking systems.
  • Act as an ambassador for ENYF, such as conducting outreach within the community, and market related workshops.
  • Demonstrate commitment to leadership development, community building, and community organizing as strategies for social change.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
