About The Position

Your role at BHSN: As a Family Support Peer Specialist, you bring self-identified lived experience—either as a parent/caregiver of a child with significant behavioral health needs or through personal experience with mental health and/or substance use recovery—to provide engagement and support in community and office settings. You will work as part of the clinic team, assisting with risk assessments, brief interventions, care management, and follow-up support after a crisis or appointment. At the discretion of the program director, you may also train and supervise other staff as appropriate. In every interaction, you are expected to deliver compassionate, high-quality care aligned with the organization’s core values.

Requirements

  • Self-identified experience as a parent (biological, foster, or adoptive) or primary caregiver of a child/young person with significant social, emotional, development, medical, substance use, and/or behavioral health needs, or personal experience with mental health and/or substance use recovery.
  • Ability to obtain OMH Peer Certification within 90 days of employment
  • Complete OHM Partnering for Safety & CPR training within 90 days of employment
  • Valid NYS driver’s license and reliable transportation required for local and regional travel

Responsibilities

  • Provides support and care to those engaged in services or treatment
  • Provides information to parents regarding educational rights of children and provides advocacy in terms of education
  • Informs individuals of OMH Participant Rights upon request
  • Understands Crisis Team policy and procedure manual, Agency and regulatory policies and procedures
  • Participates in care planning and coordination meetings to facilitate care process. As assigned, sees individuals who are an immediate crisis to curtail emergency visits and/or inpatient admissions
  • Additional duties as assigned
