About The Position

The Department of Pediatrics at the University of Kansas School of Medicine—Wichita is seeking a full-time faculty member for a Pediatric Critical Care Physician position. Candidates must hold a D.O., M.D., or equivalent degree and be board certified or board eligible in Pediatrics and Pediatric Critical Care. This role offers the opportunity to collaborate with over 25 board-certified medical and surgical pediatric specialists, providing care for children across Kansas. The position involves supporting pediatric patients at Wesley Children’s Hospital, a tertiary care clinical partner. The successful candidate should be interested in academic medicine, supporting graduate medical education programs in Pediatrics and combined Internal Medicine/Pediatrics, and contributing to the medical school campus which serves over 200 medical students. The University of Kansas School of Medicine-Wichita (KUSM-W) Department of Pediatrics is a comprehensive group dedicated to pediatric clinical care, education, scholarship, and advocacy. KUSM-W is one of three University of Kansas medical school campuses, offering modern academic facilities including a hi-fidelity simulation center and resources for clinical and translational research. A new state-of-the-art medical school, The Wichita Biomedical Center, is scheduled for completion in 2027. Wesley Children’s Hospital (WCH) is a tertiary care pediatric hospital with 76 NICU beds, 35 general inpatient beds, 15 PICU beds, and centralized pediatric sedation. The NICU and PICU are staffed 24/7 by board-certified specialists, and WCH is a level 1 trauma center with a 24/7 pediatric surgery/trauma service. Other collaborating pediatric specialties include anesthesia, urology, radiology, endocrinology, cardiology, pulmonology, genetics, infectious disease, and the state's only comprehensive pediatric oncology program. Dedicated pediatric ancillary services include an independent pediatric pharmacy and a robust child life program. Wichita, Kansas, is the largest city in Kansas, offering a friendly atmosphere with amenities like diverse restaurants, entertainment, minor league sports, shopping, and proximity to rural areas. The metropolitan area has over 640,000 residents, good public and private schools, and is considered family-friendly.

Requirements

  • MD or DO Degree or foreign degree equivalent.
  • Board eligible or certified in Pediatrics.
  • Board eligible or certified in Pediatric Critical Care.

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient care for pediatric critical care infants, children, and adolescents in PICU.
  • Work in conjunction with pediatric hospitalists and subspecialists, including anesthesia, cardiology, endocrinology, gastroenterology, infectious disease, neurology, nephrology, oncology, orthopedics, radiology, and surgery, to provide effective and co-managed pediatric critical and newborn care.
  • Participate in quality improvement and patient safety activities to improve efficiency, safety, and clinical outcomes for patients.
  • Educate, supervise, and participate in the evaluation process of residents, medical students, and other allied health trainees.
  • Assist with the development of an critical care residency curriculum.
  • Participate in scholarly activities to the extent that ACGME criteria for “core faculty” are met; these include traditional scholarly products (i.e. publications, poster presentations) as well as invited presentations (i.e. grand rounds, professional or academic society conferences) and significant educations leadership roles (i.e. curriculum development).
