About The Position

The Facilities & Residential Maintenance Specialist a key member of Porchlight's Maintenance Team and is responsible for the upkeep, repair, cleaning, and overall maintenance of properties, including buildings and surrounding grounds. This role supports Porchlight's mission by ensuring that housing units and facilities are safe, functional, and welcoming for residents, staff, and visitors. A detailed list of property-specific responsibilities will be provided upon hire.

Requirements

  • Knowledge of, or ability to learn, safe and proper use of tools, equipment, chemicals, and cleaning materials.
  • Ability to make decisions.
  • Ownership of basic carpentry and repair tools and willingness to use them on the job.
  • Valid Wisconsin Driver's License and reliable access to an insured vehicle.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated respect for diverse populations, including individuals experiencing homelessness, disabilities, or economic hardship.
  • High ethical standards and reliability.
  • Ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
  • Strong written communication skills for record-keeping, timesheets, and supervisor communication.
  • Verifiable and consistent work history of 1–3 years with a recent employer.
  • Ability to see, hear, speak, read, and write in English

Responsibilities

  • Unit Turnovers Prepare units for new tenants, including deep cleaning, painting, patching, and completing necessary repairs.
  • Maintenance & Repairs Plumbing: Repair or install sinks, faucets, toilets, and clear clogged drains or toilets.
  • Carpentry: Perform rough and finish carpentry; repair or replace doors, windows, cabinetry, siding, and complete custom work as needed.
  • Flooring: Maintain and repair existing flooring.
  • Electrical: Replace light fixtures and bulbs; test fire alarms, emergency lights, and exit lights monthly; perform minor electrical repairs.
  • Appliances: Troubleshoot and complete minor repairs on ranges and refrigerators.
  • Janitorial & Groundskeeping Pick up and dispose of trash in and around buildings, Sweep and mop common areas and transport trash to dumpsters as needed,Maintain grounds, including snow removal (hand and snow blower), salting sidewalks, mowing, landscaping, weed removal, tree pruning, and upkeep of garbage corral areas.
  • Physical & Operational Responsibilities Safely lift and carry 50 pounds or more (e.g., furniture, appliances, salt bags), Participate in an on-call rotation for after-hours emergencies and respond to snow events as directed., Maintain accurate daily time records and submit receipts and invoices, Attend maintenance team meetings and occasional all-staff meetings, Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Teamwork & Collaboration Work collaboratively with program staff and other agency employees to foster a team-oriented environment. Communicate effectively and professionally with guests, coworkers, vendors, and service providers. Build and maintain positive working relationships with external partners. Participate in the development and implementation of Porchlight's strategic plan.
