About The Position

Incumbents of this position perform a wide variety of maintenance tasks and repairs to facilities utilizing knowledge and skill in carpentry. Duties and Responsibilities Maintains buildings, tunnels, roadways, machinery and equipment by applying carpentry techniques and using the appropriate carpentry tools. Receives specific assignments and obtains materials and special tools from stock as required. Uses all standard and special tools required of primary craft and all standard tools required of other crafts as necessary. When performing work at the journeyman level the incumbent\: Reads and interprets written instructions, diagrams and maintenance manuals. Investigates building equipment or structures to identify causes of breakdown or malfunction and repair. Plans and organizes work to be performed and verifies that all necessary materials and parts are available. Constructs, assembles, repairs and/or adjusts building maintenance equipment and/or highway signs. Instructs and directs less skilled workers who have been assigned to assist in major projects. Reports breakdowns, deterioration or malfunction of building equipment to Foreman as noted during inspections and may recommend remedial action and/or the use of new materials and equipment. Enter and retrieve preventative, corrective work orders from maintenance software program. Performs maintenance and repairs on fans in vent buildings Repairs egress doors that lead into tunnels. Repairs damper and louver doors. Repairs and replaces actuators. Repairs door locks, handles and door closures throughout the District. Repairs and replaces pumps for tunnels and pump stations. Performs diversified building and grounds maintenance work below the journeymans level when not engaged in work of primary craft. Prepares reports on materials, equipment and time spent on various maintenance projects. Performs skilled fabrication and repairs to motors, pumps, grates, doors and all other equipment on D6 facilities with minimal supervision. Operates drills, grinders and other applicable tools or equipment as required, and when necessary, assists with mechanical work. Operates snow removal equipment such as snow blowers and shovels; operates snow plowing and sanding equipment if qualified and licensed; participates in in the random Mass DOT Drug and Alcohol testing pool when applicable. Performs other duties similar in nature and skill level to the above listed duties

Requirements

  • Applicants must have a high school diploma or GED and must have at least (A) four years of experience in commercial/residential construction or maintenance and (B) of which at least one year must have been in a supervisory capacity and (C) must have graduated from a qualified trade school in the appropriate craft.
  • Incumbents are required to be licensed as one or more of the following: 1. A Commonwealth of Massachusetts Construction Supervisors License issued by the Massachusetts Office of Public Safety and Inspections; 2. A Commonwealth of Massachusetts Licensed Refrigeration Technician - H.V.A.C. issued by the Massachusetts Office of Public Safety and Inspections; 3. A Commonwealth of Massachusetts Licensed Pipefitter - minimum Journeyman Level issued by the Massachusetts Office of Public Safety and Inspections; 4. A Commonwealth of Massachusetts Licensed Oil Burner Technician - minimum Journeyman Level issued by the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services; 5. A Commonwealth of Massachusetts Licensed Sprinkler Fitter - minimum Journeyman Level issued by the Massachusetts Board of State Examiners of Plumbers and Gas Fitters; 6. A Commonwealth of Massachusetts Licensed Electrician - minimum Journeyman Level issued by the Massachusetts Board of State Examiners of Electricians; 7. A Commonwealth of Massachusetts Licensed Plumber - minimum Journeyman Level issued by the Massachusetts Board of State Examiners of Plumbers and Gas Fitters; 8. A Massachusetts Department of Transportation Welder Qualification Test Record and the Welder Qualification Certificate (Green Card) is required for field welders.
  • Incumbents must possess a current, valid Class D vehicle operator's license that is maintained in good standing, or an equivalent license from the state in which s/he resides.
