About The Position

Design and Engineering Services at Penn State is seeking a skilled Facilities Engineer to join our team. This position involves providing mechanical engineering design services for construction projects and facility mechanical engineering support across all Penn State campuses. The role primarily focuses on renovations to Penn State’s buildings, facilities, and infrastructure, with project sizes ranging from small office renovations to whole building renovations and major infrastructure upgrades. Key Responsibilities: Design Activities: Conduct engineering analysis and design of building mechanical (HVAC), plumbing, and control systems. Produce design documents for permitting, bidding, and construction. Perform construction administration duties. Formulate Penn State Design Standards. Lead or participate in mechanical system evaluations and feasibility studies for future projects. Facility Engineering Support Activities: Evaluate system performance to determine corrective actions required to achieve the desired performance. Collaborate with Engineers, Project Managers, contractors, Technicians, and other personnel to implement corrections at all Penn State campus locations. Visit sites, meet with stakeholders, provide alternative solutions, estimate order-of-magnitude costs, and develop reports and scoping documents for projects.

Requirements

  • Familiarity with projects involving the design of HVAC, plumbing, hydronic, and building automation control systems.
  • Experience with facilities design and engineering tasks such as AutoCAD and Revit drawing production, mechanical code interpretation and review, heating and cooling load calculations, equipment selection, duct work, and piping system design.
  • Ability to complete work within predefined schedule and budget requirements.
  • Exceptional teamwork skills and ability to take direction as well as lead projects.
  • Experience or training with building energy analysis using building simulation software for calculating heating and cooling loads.
  • Familiarity with energy-saving calculations and ability to identify energy conservation opportunities associated with HVAC and building envelopes.
  • Experience in identifying energy conservation opportunities associated with HVAC and building envelopes.
  • Professional Engineer’s (PE) license is required, preferably in Pennsylvania.
  • If the candidate’s PE license is not in Pennsylvania, the expectation is that the successful candidate shall become registered as a PE in Pennsylvania within 9 months of the start of employment.
