About The Position

ROOF ABOVE Roof Above is NC’s most comprehensive homeless service provider. Our mission is to unite our community to end homelessness, one life at a time. Focusing on individuals experiencing homelessness, Roof Above offers everything from street outreach to shelter to Rapid Rehousing to Permanent Supportive Housing. Roof Above’s services and programs reach over 1,300 individuals every day across nine campuses in Charlotte. Roof Above was born through the merger of Urban Ministry Center and Men’s Shelter of Charlotte in 2019. POSITION SUMMARY: We are currently recruiting a FT Facilities Assistant with janitorial experience or training. The Facilities Assistant is responsible for ensuring a clean, safe, and well‑maintained environment for all building occupants. This position performs routine cleaning, sanitation, and light maintenance tasks to support daily operations and uphold facility standards. The role requires reliability, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently while following established procedures to maintain a welcoming and orderly space.

Requirements

At least 2-3 years of experience performing custodial work on commercial buildings
Ability to work with power tools and landscaping equipment
Knowledge of cleaning chemicals, supplies, and safety procedures
High school education (or equivalent); must have basic reading, writing, and math skills
Substantial relevant experience may be substituted for education
Task oriented - Proven experience in working autonomously in the absence of others or without Supervisor’s direction.
Team oriented - Experience working in groups and can treat others in a positive manner; must be able to communicate effectively with agency staff, facility staff and facility manager
Customer oriented - good customer service skills
Basic computer data entry, and mobile phone skills required for time & attendance related functions.
Demonstrated ability to manage time and schedule requirements.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills to interact with staff & clients.
Valid North Carolina driver’s license.
Requires working nontraditional hours with minimal direct supervision.
Requires much physical movement, lifting, carrying, and reading instructions.
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
Ability to move, walk, lift, bend, stand, grasp, climb steps/ladders and be able to work in an elevated environment.
Ability to tolerate physical contact with, use of, and in close proximity to approved cleaning chemicals and supplies.
Ability to work in a variety of indoor and outdoor settings.
Daily schedule of first shift, Monday- Friday with breaks and meal periods.
Ability to be on call for emergency repairs

Responsibilities

Sweep, mop, vacuum, and clean floors
Set up and break down furniture
Clean and sanitize restrooms, including sinks, toilets, and fixtures
Empty trash and recycling bins and replace liners
Dust furniture, surfaces, and equipment
Clean windows, mirrors, and glass doors
Restock supplies such as soap, paper towels, and toilet paper
Perform minor maintenance tasks (e.g., replacing light bulbs)
Perform ground maintenance
Report safety hazards, items needing repairs, or maintenance issues
Opening & Closing Campus that includes locking/unlocking doors, set/disarm alarm systems.
Maintain cleaning equipment and ensure proper storage of supplies
Escort vendors performing maintenance or repairs
Perform preventative and reactive maintenance tasks as assigned by Facility Manager
Be positive support of all Roof Above programs and staff
Be good stewards of all Roof Above property
