About The Position

This position is an Extension Support Specialist I within the Soil & Crop Sciences section of the School of Integrative Plant Science (SIPS) in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences (CALS) at Cornell University. The role involves maintaining and modifying Agricultural (Ag) Districts boundary data for public distribution on behalf of the NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets (NYS AGM). The GIS Extension Support Specialist will use data provided by county agencies participating in the Ag Districts program to create and update Ag District boundaries in a variety of file formats for publication through the Cornell Library CUGIR website, as well as the NYS AGM and NYS GIS Clearinghouse website links. The specialist will also develop and maintain database and reporting systems, serve as a resource for reporting for stakeholders, develop and tailor standard teaching aids and materials, and coordinate and assist in developing outreach and marketing efforts such as press releases, social media, and website content. Additionally, the role acts as a liaison with Ag & Markets to enhance understanding and support of programs/projects. This is a part-time, 36-hour per week position, that is fully in-person, and located in Ithaca, NY. It is a one-year term appointment contingent upon available work, funding, and performance. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree and 2 to 4 years relevant experience or equivalent combination.
  • GIS software proficiency, especially exporting map layouts and conversion to other file formats.
  • Able to use ESRI Arc Pro to edit boundaries to conform with updated Ag District maps.
  • Understanding of various graphic output file formats such as PNG, JPG, TIF and PDF.
  • Ability to coordinate with NYS and County program participants for modification and distribution of data.
  • Must be able to work independently, as well as in a team environment.
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with the utmost discretion and integrity.
  • Experience incorporating the perspectives of multiple communities.

Nice To Haves

  • Good understanding of cartographic and graphic design.
  • Strong organizational skills for file management and archiving of all digital NYS Ag Districts filetypes.
