About The Position

The Extended Absence Services Teacher provides academic instruction and continuity of learning for students in grades K–12 who are temporarily unable to attend school due to medical diagnoses or physician-recommended absences. This role supports students in maintaining academic progress and facilitates a successful transition back to their school setting. This position is part of the Alternative Education team and reports to Seth Schwieterman.

Requirements

  • Valid state teaching certification (K–12 or appropriate endorsement)
  • Ability to work with students across multiple grade levels
  • Strong communication, organizational, and collaboration skills
  • Flexibility to adjust instruction based on student medical needs and scheduling
  • Experience with homebound, hospital-based, alternative education, or special education services
  • Familiarity with IEPs, 504 Plans, or medical accommodation plans
  • Excellent verbal, written and listening communication skills
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple projects simultaneously
  • High degree of motivation, responsibility and confidentiality
  • Demonstrated ability in compiling, organizing, and analyzing data
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision in a fast-paced work environment
  • Highly collaborative team player
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Outlook, etc.)
  • Ability to self-initiate areas of opportunity, make recommendations for improvement, and follow up as necessary to achieve desired results

Responsibilities

  • Provide individualized instruction for students with temporary medical absences.
  • Collaborate with classroom teachers to align instruction with grade-level curriculum and assignments.
  • Adapt instructional methods and pacing to meet student needs while maintaining academic standards.
  • Communicate regularly with families, teachers, and school staff regarding student progress.
  • Maintain accurate instructional documentation and progress records.
  • Utilize in-person and/or virtual instructional platforms as appropriate.
  • Support student reintegration into the classroom following the conclusion of the medical absence.
  • Maintain confidentiality in accordance with FERPA and district policies.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
