In one sentence The Design Strategy & Product Specialist leads the strategic discovery and definition phases of complex projects, responsible for translating business objectives into clear design and product direction. They lead product discovery efforts, define problem spaces and opportunity areas, and create strategic frameworks that guide design execution. This role operates at the intersection of design, product, and business stakeholders—shaping what gets built and why, rather than how it looks.

Requirements

  • Proven capability leading product discovery, strategic planning, and design strategy initiatives.
  • 5-7+ years' experience in design consulting or product strategy roles, spanning industries and project types including: design strategy, product strategy, discovery research, service design, and strategic planning.
  • Deep experience with: user research synthesis, opportunity mapping, strategic roadmapping, business case development, workshop facilitation, problem framing, stakeholder alignment, journey mapping, service blueprints, and translating business objectives into design/product direction.
  • Exceptional communication and presentation skills, especially articulating strategic recommendations to senior leadership and defending strategic decisions with clarity.
  • Experience navigating complex organizational structures and building alignment across multiple stakeholder groups.
  • Proven track record partnering with product management, business stakeholders, and design teams.
  • Strong business acumen with ability to connect design strategy to business outcomes.
  • B.A. in design, business, UX research, HCI, or related field, and/or equivalent experience.

Responsibilities

  • Leads product discovery activities including opportunity assessment, problem definition, and strategic framing of design challenges.
  • Synthesizes insights from user research, market analysis, and business requirements into actionable strategic recommendations and product direction.
  • Develops strategic artifacts including vision documents, strategic roadmaps, journey maps, service blueprints, and opportunity frameworks that guide product teams.
  • Builds business cases for design investments and product initiatives, articulating value and ROI to senior stakeholders.
  • Defines conceptual directions, design principles, and strategic frameworks that inform downstream design execution.
  • Navigates complex organizational systems and vendor relationships, serving as a strategic bridge between multiple stakeholder groups.
  • Leads the conversation with senior business stakeholders around product strategy and design direction.
  • Manages themselves as the strategic lead throughout a project, planning and executing discovery and strategy work independently.
  • Guides junior designers and strategists to improved strategic thinking and outcomes.
  • Solves ambiguous, ill-defined problems and frames new problem types for the organization.
  • Produces client-ready strategic deliverables including presentations, vision docs, and roadmaps at high quality.
  • Leads workshops and facilitation sessions with cross-functional teams and senior leadership.
  • Collaborates with designers, product managers, and business teams to ensure strategic alignment.
