About The Position

With an overarching goal of helping to further advance and drive commercialization of innovation across CHOP, this role will lead the development of strategic partnerships based on CHOP's intellectual property, research, and expertise. Working closely with faculty and other members of CHOP's research community to cultivate relationships with companies across the biopharma, medtech and healthcare sectors and identify prospects for sponsorship, alliances and collaborations involving CHOP research, services and capabilities. This role will manage business development, negotiation, execution and alliance management of large, innovative and mutually beneficial strategic partnerships for CHOP. Additionally, this position will help to guide future strategies by providing technology analysis, competitive research, and interpreting of industry trends, needs, and business development opportunities.

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in life sciences related field or MBA Required
  • At least ten (10) years of corporate development, strategic partnerships, business development, or technology transfer experience Required
  • Advanced knowledge of university research environments, intellectual property management, innovation and entrepreneurship, and sponsored research agreements

Nice To Haves

  • At least twelve (12) years of corporate development, strategic partnerships, business development, or technology transfer experience within a university setting, research institution, or a technology-driven corporation Preferred
  • Previous experience with cell and gene therapy Preferred
  • Previous experience with device, diagnostic and therapeutic development Preferred
  • Previous experience with digital technologies including AI Preferred

Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership: Develop and execute a comprehensive strategic plan to build and expand corporate partnerships that align with the CHOP’s mission and strategic goals.
  • Relationship Management: Develop relationships with corporate scouts, business development leaders and scientists in bio-pharma leading to long-term potential for partnership, funding and technology transfer by attending industry and scientific functions and bringing companies to CHOP to meet with CHOP faculty.
  • Program Alignment & Development: Collaborate with faculty, and other members of the Research Institute to ensure that academic programs and research initiatives align with emerging industry trends.
  • Business Development: Drive new strategic partnership agreements, negotiate complex contracts (including for research, technology transfer, and intellectual property commercialization), that generate significant revenue for reinvestment in R&D and patient care.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Serve as a liaison between CHOP and corporate partners, coordinating with internal teams such as Strategy, Marketing, Legal, and Finance to ensure seamless execution and alignment of objectives.
  • Team Leadership: Build, mentor, and lead a high-performing team responsible for partner engagement, ensuring accountability and professional development.
  • Operational Oversight: Manage the budget and resources for the Corporate Alliances team and establish KPIs and governance models to track success and optimize performance.
  • Strategic Direction: In collaboration with SVP to serve as a key member of the Innovation Ventures leadership team, work closely with the SVP to shape the strategic direction of Innovation Ventures’ initiatives across CHOP.
  • Communication: Articulate complex scientific and technical concepts to a wide variety of audiences, from researchers to corporate executives.
