Performs full-time work involving operating and driving heavy, complex equipment. Repairs, maintains or clears roads, fields, and rights-of-way; performs routine adjustments and maintenance on equipment. Operates special function vehicles under limited supervision. Employees in this position are relied upon to perform difficult and highly technical operations with the heavy equipment they operate. Serves as lead worker for less experienced workers. Employee is subject to federal Department of Transportation Commercial Drivers Drug/Alcohol Testing and Mesa County Drug/Alcohol testing policies. Carries out lead worker responsibilities including training in job skills, assigning and directing work, making recommendations in performance appraisal, and reporting problems to supervisor. Basic computer skills and ability to meet needs of Mesa County Road and Bridge. Demolishes concrete and asphalt with available equipment as directed. Makes repairs using available materials as assigned. Work may involve excavation, backfill, tying rebar, setting forms, setting grades, pouring and finishing concrete, placing hot or cold mix asphalt, and other related duties as directed. Ability and knowledge to fill portable propane tanks from propane filling station. Operates mower tractors and other right-of-way maintenance equipment in order to mow and edge grass and trim trees and shrubbery. Removes old pipe and excavates for new pipes using backhoe and skid steer loader; transports pipe and equipment to job site; sets new pipe in place, levels and ensures correct elevations of pipe using transit; occasionally locates backfill material, loads it, and hauls it to job site using various equipment; backfills excavations, removes excess backfill material. Frequently required to be on 24‑hour call out status. Clears plugged culverts and storm drains using jet rodder, and other equipment. Drives and operates complex construction and maintenance equipment such as motor graders, bulldozers, front end loaders, dump trucks, backhoe, roller, sweeper, low boy tractor trailers, and heavy excavating equipment in order to transport material and perform maintenance and repair activities. Constructs roads, bridges, cattleguards, culverts, guardrails, flat and structural concrete, using equipment and materials assigned or directed. Maintains or repairs roads (including snow removal) and rights-of-way; grades, hauls, mixes dirt, debris and other materials. Assists with traffic control at road construction sites by directing traffic and assisting other equipment operators in maneuvering equipment. Performs routine maintenance on equipment such as checking oil and fluid levels, checking tire pressure, and checking belts. May be assigned to a certain piece of specialized equipment with annual service or maintenance plans or requiring special knowledge of area and logistical needs of residents of an area. Employee is subject to Emergency call out with 60 minute response time to emergency conditions of county roads. Oral and written communications must be clear and effective. Performs other related duties as assigned.
