About The Position

Working under the direction of the Director of Public Works, Supervisor of the Bureau of Collection Systems, and direct supervision of the Foreman of the Bureau, the incumbent performs a variety of skilled maintenance works and operates a variety of equipment in the construction, operation, repair, maintenance, and replacement of the City sewer, street, and storm drainage facilities and systems. This position is considered a union position and is a non-exempt status. The essential duties include responding to complaints, monitoring and repairing various city systems, training lower-level employees, contacting residents, driving trucks, operating construction equipment, performing labor as part of a crew, assisting with planning, ensuring safety, reading blueprints, collaborating with the Engineering department, responding to Pennsylvania One Call System, handling wastewater materials, maintaining equipment, assisting with pump station inspections, and potentially assisting with snow and ice removal.

Requirements

  • Must possess a high school diploma or the equivalent (GED).
  • Two (2) or more years’ experience in the performance of heavy manual labor and light and heavy machinery.
  • Must possess a valid PA State Commercial Driver’s License (Class B), with a tanker endorsement, and a safe driving record.
  • The successful applicant will be subject to an extensive background check before employment.

Responsibilities

  • Responds to complaints; evaluates situations; reports problems to the correct supervisor
  • Monitor, inspect, and/or repair pumping stations, reservoir, streets, drainage systems, and sewer systems at frequent intervals to ensure that all aspects of the systems are functioning properly.
  • Ability to train and guide lower-level employees on job duties and technique
  • Contacts residents and business owners where services will be discontinued within the City
  • Ability to drive trucks of various sizes and weights in the loading, hauling, and unloading
  • Operates light and medium-sized construction and power equipment (hand tools, mechanized broom, jetter/inductor truck or backhoe/loader, pipeline inspection equipment)
  • Preforms required labor as part of a crew, including pavement cutting, ditch digging, manhole and line cleaning, main and pipe repair, laying and backfilling, manhole and catch basin repair.
  • Assists with planning, scheduling and implementation of construction, maintenance, operation and construction activities designed to provide quality sewer, street and drainage service for the City.
  • Knowledge and conformance to the best safety and security standards and practices including trench boxes and shoring.
  • Familiarity with reading blueprint plans, computer drafted plans, and maintaining a variety of records relating to the sewer, street, and storm facilities.
  • Collaborate with the City’s Engineering department along with other outside contractors
  • Properly responds to Pennsylvania One Call System along with other outside companies marking underground utilities
  • Must be capable of, and willing to, handle and work around materials (wastewater grit, sludge, chemicals) encountered during work
  • Ensure proper maintenance and cleaning of equipment and tools after use
  • Capable of performing all duties of positions in the Collection Crew which are lower in category
  • Assists in pump station and meter station inspections on an as needed basis
  • Possibility of assisting with snow and ice removal
  • Must be available for pager/call-out duty and emergency callouts
