About The Position

The successful candidate will be responsible for environmental compliance on-site at the mine. The duties may include but will not be limited to, managing data files, managing surface water runoff, managing reclaimed crop and native grasslands, and demonstrating reclamation success to obtain bond release.

Requirements

  • Strong ethical conduct as it pertains to compliance with laws and regulations
  • Ability to work with others
  • Knowledge of AutoCad and/or ArcGIS
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability and readiness to handle phone calls and questions outside of normal work hours, as needed
  • Knowledge of surface mining operations and applicable laws and regulations
  • Ability to organize and prioritize complicated projects, coordinating data and input from several sources to achieve a desired result
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Good interpersonal skills, ability to confidently negotiate complex and contentious issues with regulatory agencies
  • Knowledge of basic statistical analysis techniques
  • Valid driver’s license
  • A bachelor’s degree in natural resource management, environmental science, environmental engineering, fish and wildlife management, biology, agronomy, or related field is required; or, an associate’s degree in a related field and two years of environmental experience may be considered in lieu of a bachelor’s degree.

  • Knowledge in identification/taxonomy of plants, animals, or soils is desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare permits, mining permit revisions, bond release documents, and associated monitoring reports
  • Develop, execute, and administer various specialized environmental contracts associated with cultural resources, vegetation, soils, and wildlife
  • Monitor day to day mining operations for environmental compliance including assisting and directing pond dewatering activities and soils/material handling
  • Collect data, compile reports, and administer contracts relating to surface and ground water
  • Accompany regulatory personnel on inspections and maintain professional contacts with state and federal regulatory authorities
  • Oversee post-mining land management, including farming and grazing plans, weed control, and tree and shrub establishment. Collect and organize subsequent data
  • Coordinate and direct bond release of reclaimed land, including identifying improvements to reclamation methods, data management, long-term strategic planning, and scheduling
  • Work with other departments on the mine to accomplish environmental goals and maintain a culture of environmental stewardship
  • Monitor mine for proper waste management. Conduct inspections and compile reports
  • Perform job duties in accordance with MSHA law and regulations, established company safety procedures, and state and federal regulations
  • Identify projects and costs associated with annual and long-range budgeting
  • Other duties as assigned
