About The Position

Ohio EPA wants you to join our team as an environmental specialist with the Division of Air Pollution Control (DAPC) at our Central Office in Columbus, Ohio. You’ll help ensure Ohioans have clean air. Not bad for a day’s work! We’re looking for a motivated, collaborative person to support our responsibility to regulate industrial air quality. In this role, you’ll review and process a wide range of permits to install and operate for a range of industries—from electric utilities, renewable energy and data centers to food production, chemical and metals manufacturing, and more. You’ll dig into facility emissions data, check it for accuracy, and run calculations using emission factors or mass balance methods. You’ll also visit regulated facilities to investigate air pollution issues, document findings, and help improve emissions factors along the way. This job puts you in direct contact with the regulated community, giving you the chance to understand their operations, support compliance, and grow into an industry specific expert. When necessary, you’ll respond to citizen complaints about air pollution and provide technical assistance to industry staff, government officials, and the public. Requirements

  • 12 mos. exp. as Environmental Specialist 1, 85861.
  • OR 4 yrs. trg. or 4 yrs. exp. in position involving engineering or chemistry, physics, biology, environmental science, geology or hydrogeology &/or other comparable physical or health science field &/or mathematics which included responsibility for conducting compliance monitoring surveys &/or inspections/reviews or investigations, or review of permit applications relative to oil & gas well operations or injection, annular disposal & saltwater injection wells & enhanced recovery projects or coal mining, or solid/hazardous waste sites or industrial & municipal wastewater dischargers, or collecting, compiling & preparing various environmental assessments, evaluations, reports & related documents. Training & experience must be commensurate with duties to be assigned.
  • OR baccalaureate degree in engineering, chemistry, physics, biology, environmental science, earth science &/or urban & regional planning, geology or other comparable physical or health science fields, with training to be commensurate with duties to be assigned.

Responsibilities

  • Review and process air permits for a variety of industrial facilities.
  • Review emissions data for accuracy and perform standard emissions calculations.
  • Investigate regulated facilities to determine compliance with air pollution regulations.
  • Connect with the regulated community to understand permitting and compliance needs and become an industry-specific expert.
  • Investigate citizen complaints and provide technical assistance to constituents.
