About The Position

At the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency, our primary goal is to protect the environment and public health. We do this by ensuring compliance with federal and state environmental laws. Ohio EPA wants you to join our team as a solid waste engineer in the Division of Materials and Waste Management (DMWM) at our Southwest District Office in Dayton, Ohio. For us, proper management of Ohio’s waste is mission critical. We are looking for a detail-oriented individual who can work independently to review engineering plans and permit applications for solid waste landfills, waste transfer stations, and construction and demolition debris facilities to ensure they are accurate and compliant with applicable state laws and regulations. You’ll perform field inspections and environmental sampling of waste management facilities and conduct complaint investigations. Based on your thorough analyses, you’ll prepare reports and correspondence summarizing inspection findings and develop strategies for bringing about compliance for facilities, as needed, including enforcement referrals. As a subject matter expert, you’ll provide technical assistance to permittees, boards of health, government officials, and industry professionals regarding established solid waste management regulations and practices.

Requirements

  • 12 mos. exp. as Environmental Specialist 1, 85861.
  • 4 yrs. trg. or 4 yrs. exp. in a position involving engineering (Sanitary, Geotechnical, Civil, Environmental, Agricultural or Chemical). Training & experience must be commensurate with duties to be assigned.
  • baccalaureate degree in engineering (Sanitary, Geotechnical, Civil, Environmental, Agricultural or Chemical).

Responsibilities

  • Conduct compliance reviews of permit applications and technical documents for waste management facilities.
  • Perform field inspections to ensure quality assurance and permit compliance.
  • Prepare reports and correspondence for non-compliance and enforcement matters.
  • Provide technical assistance to boards of health, government officials, and industry professionals.
