About The Position

Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates (KPF) is seeking a talented Environmental Designer passionate about sustainability and building performance to join our Environmental Performance (KPFep) team in NYC for a part-time internship. The intern’s work time will be spent supporting a research project focused on quantifying the embodied carbon in the Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing (MEP) systems in an all-electric, Class A Office Tower in NYC.

Requirements

  • Enrolled in an accredited Undergraduate or Master Program (Architecture or Engineering), with a focus on Environmental/Sustainable Design and/or Building Science
  • Passion for learning and applying principles of sustainable and high-performance design
  • Strong graphic, design, and visualization skills, as well as good communication skills
  • Proficiency with Revit and Microsoft Excel
  • Knowledge of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methods and tools for the analysis of embodied carbon in architecture, including One Click LCA
  • Knowledge of Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs), including finding EPDs and extracting data from them

Nice To Haves

  • Experience completing an LCA of MEP systems utilizing the “Beginners Guide to MEP Embodied Carbon” not required but highly desirable
  • Experience with data visualization not required but highly desirable

Responsibilities

  • Research and analyze the global warming potential for MEP systems
  • Support material quantity takeoff for relevant MEP systems using Revit Models, Drawing Sets, Design Narratives, and/or other available information
  • Assemble and assign appropriate embodied carbon factors to equipment using available EPDs, datasets, LCA tools, and/or other resources
  • Post-process LCA results to organize project material take off and embodied carbon results
  • Follow directions positively and thoroughly
  • Ask questions to ensure that assigned tasks are mutually understood
