About The Position

The Center for Environmental Management of Military Lands (CEMML) at Colorado State University is seeking 2 summer interns to support the Environmental Division at Fort A.P. Hill, Virginia. This seasonal internship is anticipated to run from mid-May to August, depending on school schedule. The internship will support mission needs across multiple environmental disciplines, including compliance, natural resources, and cultural resources. The interns will work alongside subject matter experts to support field data collection and inspections along with special projects to support the day-to-day requirements needed for successful program support.

Requirements

  • Candidates must currently be enrolled in an accredited college or university program or provide proof of acceptance and intent to enroll for the upcoming fall semester with a focus in Environmental Studies or similar program.
  • Candidates must have a valid driver’s license and be able to drive a four-wheel drive truck.
  • Due to the nature of the work, candidates must be comfortable working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, high humidity, and precipitation. Candidates should also be comfortable with potential exposure to stinging insects, ticks, and thorny vegetation.
  • Pre-employment background check required for all individuals working on a Federal facility.
  • As of May 2025, a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or a valid U.S. Passport is required for initial Visitor Control Center processing.
  • Installation access - You will be subject to the Garrison Commander's rules. Any felony conviction within the last 10 years or certain misdemeanors typically result in immediate denial of base access

  • Candidates with local knowledge and familiarity with the specific flora and fauna of the region
  • Candidates with previous experience working on military installations or a clear understanding of protocols.

Responsibilities

  • Support regulatory inspections and field data collection for the Compliance Division.
  • Assist with wildlife, vegetation, and invasive species surveys and management activities.
  • Support habitat restoration, endangered species surveys, and other natural resource management projects.
  • Assist cultural resources with field surveys and data collection
