About The Position

The Environmental, Health and Safety Manager is responsible for establishing and maintaining a strong safety culture, implementation of Kaiser EHS programs along with ensuring OSHA compliance. The individual will be responsible for leading and implementing all aspects of the safety program to ensure compliance with existing corporate standards, industry best practices and audit processes to ensure continuous improvement in plant safety and health. This person will report to the Plant Manager and provide Safety/Environmental support and insight at the Bellwood Plant. Individual will drive improvements based on Safety requirements; as well as, Kaiser Aluminum safety program demands and help improve safety performance in Bellwood Virginia.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Occupational Safety & Health, Environmental or a similar degree and (6) or more years commensurate experience in a safety & environmental position performing the above functions and responsibilities.
  • Strong technical ability allowing for the interpretation and application of Regulatory and Company standards.
  • Strong PC skills, including Windows, Word, and Excel.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) and organizational skills.
  • Proven ability to work in teams.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • Willingness to work flexible hours.
  • Ability to work in and lead cross functional teams.
  • 6+ years of leadership experience in safety management or environmental regulatory management with a record of progressive accomplishments.
  • The candidate must possess a fundamental working knowledge and understanding of State and Federal regulations pertaining to OSHA, EPA, NFPA, NEC and ANSI.
  • Ability to manage Air issues including Title V permitting, the Aluminum RRR NESHAP and Stack testing and have previous experience working with Federal agencies.
  • Must be able to walk/climb throughout all mill areas.
  • Experience with management of Environmental programs including RCRA, CWA, Title V, RRR NESHAP, RI/FS and ISO 14001 is required.

Nice To Haves

  • Specific experience in the areas of risk assessments, ergonomics, Human Organizational Performance (HOP)and Lean Manufacturing are a plus.
  • Certification is a plus: Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associate Safety Professional (ASP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH), or similar.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to different sites throughout North America, as requested. (Travel Requirements less than 10%)
  • The preferred candidate will have the desire to a solid track record of successfully implementing and managing safety processes in a manufacturing environment.
  • Understanding of Safety Management Systems such as ANSI Z10 and OSHA VPP.

Responsibilities

  • Leading and implementing all aspects of the Bellwood safety and environmental programs to comply with existing corporate standards, industry best practices and audit processes to ensure continuous improvement in plant safety, environmental & health.
  • Develop safety champions and leaders throughout the site organization through coaching and actively engaging the site resources.
  • Analyze leading and lagging indicators to strategically drive change throughout the site.
  • Development, execution, and follow up of Key Performance Indicators and Strategic Deployment Matrix items is essential.
  • Daily management and engagement of the line organization is required to manage and improve incident investigations, hazard control, safe work practices and safety communications.
  • Responsible for short and long term safety program planning, including annual strategic safety plans and injury reduction goals to support a sustainable environment.
  • Assessing and ensuring training needs for the workforce are fulfilled.
  • Safety and Environmental Program Management includes safety and health policy/procedure development and administration, safety program audits and inspections, review and application of state and federal regulations and development of safety training to support prevention initiatives.
  • Spend significant time (>50%) on the shop floor engaging line management and department personnel through coaching, training, and reinforcement.
  • Liaison to Union safety representatives, co-chair joint company/union safety meetings and lead joint union management prevention activities.
  • Ensure compliance with hearing conservation program requirements.
  • Help resolve safety issues and complaints. Worker's Comp. support.
  • Support the management of the Health and Safety Management System as a plant representative and be an active leader in the daily plant safety activities.
  • Conduct audits of employee and contractor work sites against Kaiser Aluminum standards, regulatory standards (OSHA), and for recognition of hazards.
  • Actively participate as part of the Corporate EHS team at other sites, as needed, for audits, meetings, or other activities.
  • Perform the above with minimal direction and through joint union management efforts.
