About The Position

The Environmental Health & Safety (EHS) Leader is responsible for developing, planning, coordinating, and directing environmental, health, and safety activities to ensure employee engagement, regulatory compliance, and effective implementation of the EHS management system to protect human health and the environment. This role also supports the scalable expansion of EHS programs across existing and newly acquired locations, including the development of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) metrics and reporting. This is an individual contributor role that will grow as the company grows.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Safety Science or related field and a minimum of 4 years of relevant work experience in manufacturing/distribution environment.
  • or an additional 4 years of relevant work experience in lieu of degree
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Associate Safety Professional (ASP) credential.
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health Safety Administration (OSHA), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) regulations and reporting requirements.
  • Demonstrated professional with passion for change and relentless focus on execution.
  • Must be highly organized; able to prioritize and meet target dates in a very fast-paced environment.

Responsibilities

  • Performs regular warehouse floor walks at all facilities with operations leadership to observe work practices, identify improvement opportunities, and reinforce positive safety behaviors through coaching and recognition.
  • Supports change management efforts related to EHS integration during mergers and acquisitions, including gap assessments, corrective action planning, and cultural alignment.
  • Tracks leading and lagging EHS indicators for leadership including the board of directors.Establishes a culture that is aligned with Wheeler’s EHS goals and objectives, with continuous EHS improvements.
  • Manages, directs, coaches, leads, and motivates facility personnel to achieve EHS goals and objectives in a timely and safe manner, while continuously striving to improve safety skills & awareness.
  • Plans, directs, and coordinates EHS compliance activities through functional teams.
  • Key EHS liaison with location distribution and maintenance organizations assisting in the execution of their strategic and tactical EHS plans.
  • Develops and implements Environmental, Health and Safety program and activities for the facility to achieve, maintain and exceed compliance with relevant regulatory laws and regulations.
  • Responsible for directing incident investigations identifying root causes of EHS Incidents and executing sustainable corrective actions.
  • Identifies and develops good working relationships with federal, state, and local authorities (i.e., safety agencies, fire departments, etc.) as well as their appropriate internal Environmental, Health and Safety contacts.
  • Leads the development, implementation, and maintenance of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) metrics related to EHS, including data collection, performance tracking, and internal reporting to support corporate sustainability and governance objectives.
  • Develops, coordinates and/or conducts EHS training programs.
  • Coordinates and assists in the execution of capital EHS projects to ensure compliance with requirements and completion on a timely basis. This includes recommendation of EHS capital equipment purchases and other equipment to ensure compliance with rules and regulations.
  • Leads and assists safety teams to understand and own safety and compliance to the lowest level.
  • Assists in providing information for Workers Compensation requests (incident investigations).
  • Responsible for driving processes that will result in a reduction of accidents and injuries and the identification of hazards present in the workplace.
  • Advises, develops, and facilitates safety training to employees and supervisors.
  • Develops and maintains Emergency Evacuation Plans and train the corresponding team members.
  • Schedules annual fire drills to test the plan and coordinate with internal and local authorities.
  • Maintains the Benchmark Gensuite, compliance management software.
  • Other duties as assigned.
