About The Position

The Systems Engineer is focused on the development, implementation, and management of technology solutions that support the campus environment. This position will champion efforts to integrate cloud-based services, manage identity and access controls, and optimize physical and virtual servers in the datacenter and in the cloud. The engineer will work closely with external providers and internal stakeholders to ensure seamless integration and operation of critical systems, including Okta, JAMF, Google, Active Directory, and VDI solutions. This is a leadership role in the department and this position serves on multiple campus committees.

Requirements

  • In depth knowledge of networking protocols.
  • In depth knowledge of server virtualization and cloud hosting architecture.
  • In depth understanding of identity management systems, particularly Okta, Azure, and Active Directory.
  • Expertise in Microsoft Configuration Manager (SCCM) and its application in an academic environment.
  • Expertise in JAMF and Munki and its application in an academic environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead complex IT projects and cross-functional teams.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with faculty, staff, and students.
  • Strong problem-solving abilities and a proactive approach to process improvement.
  • Ability to manage time effectively and balance multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field.
  • Eight years of relevant work experience, with at least five years in a system engineer or equivalent role.
  • Proven experience in identity management, device management, cloud services, and VDI.

Nice To Haves

  • A master’s degree is preferred.
  • Relevant certifications (e.g., Okta Certified Professional, Palo Alto Certified Network Security Engineer, Cisco Certified Network Associate) are highly desirable.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with Institutional Technology teams to develop strategies, implement policies, and conduct needs assessments to support the technological infrastructure of campus services.
  • Plan and oversee the design, deployment, and management of systems focused on identity management, device management, and cloud services integration.
  • Assist in the administration, optimization, and integration of the Okta identity management platform.
  • Develop and enforce security policies, including Single Sign-On (SSO) and Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA), ensuring secure access to campus resources.
  • Lead Management and support of JAMF and Munki for efficient software distribution, patch management, and device compliance.
  • Secondary support and management of Microsoft Configuration Manager (SCCM).
  • Oversee the lifecycle management of academic and administrative devices, ensuring they meet institutional standards and requirements.
  • Direct the design, integration, and management of cloud hosted server resources, ensuring alignment with institutional needs and enhancing collaboration across campus platforms.
  • Evaluate, recommend, and implement cloud-based solutions to support campus infrastructure and services.
  • Design, implement, and maintain physical and virtual servers both on premise and in the cloud. This includes the design, installation, and maintenance of the infrastructure required to support these servers.
  • Collaborate in the design, implementation, and management of the campus network.
  • Provide technical leadership in cross-functional teams, ensuring that campus infrastructure projects align with institutional goals.
  • Engage with faculty, staff, and students to understand their needs and translate them into effective technical solutions.
  • Identify opportunities to improve institutional effectiveness and efficiency through the automation of user support processes and services.
  • Lead efforts to enhance the quality of service delivery, including problem-solving, service request management, and escalation processes.
  • Establish and maintain security protocols for application-layer security in consultation with the Institutional Technology security team.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant regulations and best practices related to campus IT infrastructure.
  • Serve as a member of the security team responsible for protecting all campus computing resources.
  • Manage technology contracts and maintain relationships with vendors, ensuring the delivery of high-quality services and products.
  • Oversee the evaluation and procurement of new technologies and services to support campus initiatives.
  • Stay current with emerging technologies and trends in academic IT infrastructure, including desktop computing, VDI, cloud services, and identity management.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance technical skills and knowledge.
