About The Position

This position is accountable for the preparation of permits required when work is performed on state right-of way and other duties as assigned by the Senior Permits Technician. Requirements

  • Completion of two years of college in civil engineering technology, pre-engineering or a job related technical/science curriculum PLUS five years of engineering experience; OR Seven years of engineering experience.
  • This position has been found to meet the requirements in section 4A-101 of the Illinois Governmental Ethics Act requiring the occupant/employee to file a Statement of Economic Interest.
  • The employee should be aware that if offered non-State employment during state employment or within one year immediately after ending State employment, the employee shall, prior to accepting any such non-State employment offer, notify the Office of the Executive Inspector General for the Agencies of the Illinois Governor (OEIG) or may be subject to a fine.
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Extensive districtwide travel.
  • Successful completion of a background screening.

  • Knowledge of principles and practices of civil engineering and the application of engineering techniques to design and construction of driveways and stormwater drainage.

  • Ability to act as a project manager by communicating and managing timeline expectations with the public and coordinating with other knowledgeable Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) staff.
  • Ability to develop and maintain cooperative relationships.

Responsibilities

  • Keeps abreast of the policies, projects, and programs in the Bureaus of Program Development and Project Implementation to obtain necessary information to properly prepare permits.
  • Calculates accurately the precise location of the area for which the permit is issued.
  • Adheres to state, department, and district policies, laws and regulations.
  • Provides a high level of service to the public and other agencies that the incumbent encounters. This includes proper phone etiquette and patient explanation of technical requirements to laypeople.
  • Maintains records of permits issued and recorded in regular logs, files, and electronic files.
  • Issues permits in a timely manner.
  • Draws permit plans utilizing available software.
  • Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules.
  • Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
