About The Position

This position is accountable for learning the required complex and diverse tests on material submitted to the district laboratory to ensure that materials used on highway and bridge construction contracts meet applicable specifications. The incumbent is responsible for learning how to prepare and maintain accurate records of these tests.

Requirements

  • Completion of two years of college in civil engineering technology, pre-engineering or a job related technical/science curriculum; OR two years of engineering experience.
  • Certification in Aggregate Technician 5 day, PCC I and HMA 1 in the IDOT Quality Management Training Program within 12 months of hire date.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • 24/7 emergency call availability.
  • Some travel within the district and occasional statewide travel with limited overnight stays.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces, climb steep terrain, wade in water, deal with poisonous plants, animals, insects, rodents, and snakes.
  • Ability to work outdoors in a variety of conditions including, but not limited to, inclement weather (hot, cold, wet, windy, muddy), active construction sites and roadways open to traffic.
  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds.
  • Occasional overtime.
  • Successful completion of a pre-employment physical and pre-employment drug and alcohol screening.
  • Successful completion of a background check.
  • Certain provisions of the revolving door restrictions contained in 5 ILCS 430/5-45 apply to this position. As a result, the employee should be aware that if offered non-State employment during State employment or within one year immediately after ending State employment, the employee shall, prior to accepting any such non-State employment offer, notify the Office of the Executive Inspector General for the Agencies of the Illinois Governor (“OEIG”) or may be subject to a fine.

Responsibilities

  • Performs and monitors tests on materials submitted to the district laboratory.
  • Documents and prepares reports of test results.
  • Assists in maintaining an inventory of equipment within the Materials Section.
  • Stores, uses, and disposes of hazardous materials according to the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) policy.
  • Maintains, stores, and calibrates testing equipment.
  • Attends and successfully completes assigned training.
  • Performs duties in compliance with departmental safety rules. Performs all duties in a manner conducive to the fair and equitable treatment of all employees.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
