About The Position

Employee in this position will serve as a County Maintenance Engineer for Harnett County. This position will be responsible for all maintenance and force account construction activities in Harnett County in accordance with established policies and procedures. Supervise and monitor maintenance program to ensure efficient and safe use of personnel, equipment and materials; accomplish force account and construction projects; formulate a comprehensive highway maintenance program within limits of budget; supervise and evaluate the performance of other employees; communicate effectively and maintain working relationships with general public, local government, fellow employees, media, etc. Position has Emergency Call Back status and must be able to respond to Highway emergencies and work during inclement weather events. Considerable knowledge of the use and operation of all field and office engineering instruments; ability to understand, explain and administer contracts; ability to interpret plans, provisions and specifications; ability to interpret policies and regulations; and the ability to establish working relationships between the department and citizens.

  • Bachelor’s degree in an applicable field of engineering from an appropriately accredited institution and two (2) years of progressively responsible experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • May require registration as a professional engineer by the North Carolina Board of Examiners for Engineers and Surveyors.

  • Experience managing multiple projects and scheduling and directing multiple work crews
  • Experience using of professional engineering skills and knowledge to trouble shoot and solve highway maintenance problems
  • Experience tracking cost expenditures in various account systems on multiple large projects
  • Experience conducting meetings with employees, citizens and public officials to conduct investigations and resolve various issues
  • Customer service experience related to resolving problems that involve explaining engineering concepts to various customer groups.
