Job Summary: Reporting to the Chief Technical and Product Officer, the Engineering Manager is a critical role for the growth of Andela. The Role Andela is looking for an experienced Software Engineering Manager with a strong background in Ruby on Rails to lead, mentor, and scale high-performing engineering teams. In this role, you’ll balance technical leadership with people management, ensuring teams deliver high-quality software while growing their skills and careers. You’ll collaborate closely with product managers, designers, and other engineering leaders to drive execution, improve engineering practices, and contribute to Andela’s long-term technical vision.

Requirements

10+ years of professional software development experience, with significant hands-on experience in Ruby on Rails.
3+ years of experience managing or leading software engineering teams.
Strong understanding of web application architecture, APIs, databases, and cloud-based systems.
Experience delivering and maintaining production-grade Rails applications at scale.
Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
Proven ability to coach, mentor, and develop engineers.
Experience working with distributed or remote teams is a strong plus.

Nice To Haves

Experience with modern frontend frameworks (React, Vue, etc.).
Familiarity with DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure).
Prior experience in a high-growth or global organization.

Responsibilities

Lead and manage a team of software engineers, fostering a culture of ownership, collaboration, and continuous improvement
Provide technical guidance and architectural oversight for Ruby on Rails applications.
Partner with Product and Design to plan, scope, and deliver features that align with business goals.
Conduct regular 1:1s, performance reviews, and career development planning for engineers.
Ensure best practices in code quality, testing, security, and scalability.
Identify and resolve technical and organizational challenges that impact team delivery.
Support hiring, onboarding, and team growth initiatives.
