About The Position

As an Engineering Manager at Via, you will oversee the development and maintenance of our backend systems that power our global transit platform. Via partners with cities and agencies around the world to improve mobility - especially for communities that rely on services such as paratransit and student transportation. You’ll combine technical leadership with hands-on engineering, helping shape both the architecture of our platform and the growth of the engineers on your team and supporting systems that impact hundreds of thousands of riders every week.

Requirements

  • You’ve spent 8+ years building backend systems, designing distributed, reliable, high-performance services.
  • You’re strong in Python, Java, C++, or C# and confident in making technical decisions that scale.
  • You’ve managed and developed engineering teams and understand how to grow talent.
  • You know your way around cloud platforms (AWS), microservices, and Kubernetes, and can think through infrastructure challenges.
  • You understand databases, performance tuning, and debugging complex systems inside and out.
  • You love leading engineers while staying close to the technical details.
  • You think in terms of systems and long-term impact, balancing reliability, performance, and speed.
  • You’re a strong communicator, able to connect with engineers, product managers, and non-technical stakeholders alike.
  • You thrive in an environment where you can make a difference, grow your team, and see the real-world impact of your work.

Responsibilities

  • Grow and mentor high-performing engineers, creating a culture of ownership, learning, and technical excellence.
  • Scale Via’s core backend systems to handle more riders, more drivers, and more real-time transit data - making our APIs and services faster, more reliable, and more efficient.
  • Shape the architecture of our distributed systems, helping our platform evolve as we grow globally and handle more complex routing and operations.
  • Roll up your sleeves and code when needed, helping debug tough production issues and making technical decisions alongside your team.
  • Partner closely with cross-functional teams to turn challenging transit problems into real-world solutions - from routing systems to tools for paratransit and student transportation programs.
  • Improve our engineering processes, from CI/CD practices to coding standards, making it easier to ship quickly while keeping our platform rock-solid.
