Engineering Manager, Proactive Communications

Hinge-HealthSan Francisco, CA
3d$240,000 - $360,000Hybrid

About The Position

As the Engineering Manager for Proactive Comms, you will lead the team responsible for how Hinge Health intelligently connects with our members. You will oversee a multidisciplinary team of Machine Learning Scientists and Software Engineers dedicated to building the systems that reach out to members at the right time, with the right message, through the right channel. Your team’s mission is to leverage our proprietary data and predictive models to move beyond generic notifications toward "delightful interactions." Whether it’s an SMS nudge, a personalized email, or an in-app notification, your team builds the infrastructure that ensures these communications are seamless, timely, and impactful. As a key leader, you will collaborate with senior leadership, product management, and marketing teams to coordinate across our three physical locations: San Francisco HQ, Montreal, and Bangalore. As a hands-on engineering leader, you are expected to stay close to the technology: understanding your team's full stack, contributing code, and regularly reviewing and merging pull requests (~15% of your time).

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related technical field
  • 5+ years of experience managing teams of 5+ technologists (specifically experience managing a mix of Software Engineers and Data Scientists/ML Researchers)
  • 5+ years of experience building and deploying high-scale, member-facing software systems (supporting thousands to millions of Daily Active Users)
  • Proven track record of delivering distributed systems or backend services in a cloud environment (AWS, GCP, or Azure)

Nice To Haves

  • Communication Systems Expertise: Deep experience building or managing member-facing communication platforms (SMS, Push Notifications, Email) and familiarity with tools like Twilio, Braze, or internal notification engines
  • ML Integration: Experience leading teams that deploy ML models into production environments to drive business logic or user engagement
  • Omni-channel Experience: A strong understanding of the nuances of different communication channels and how to optimize for member "delight" rather than just "noise"
  • Bonus Tech: Experience with or interest in Conversational AI/LLMs as a future channel for member interaction
  • Regulated Industry Knowledge: Experience working within healthcare (HIPAA) or other highly regulated environments involving sensitive member data
  • Proficiency in Modern Stacks: Working knowledge of Python, TypeScript/Node.js, AWS services (Lambda, SQS, SNS, SageMaker), and modern DevOps practices

Responsibilities

  • Lead a Multi-Disciplinary Team: Manage and mentor a hybrid team of ML scientists and software engineers, fostering a culture of collaboration between data-driven experimentation and robust system engineering.
  • Build the Comms Engine: Architect and scale a unified communications platform that orchestrates member outreach across SMS, email, in-app notifications, and nudges.
  • Data-Driven Engagement: Partner with ML scientists to integrate proprietary models into our communication workflows, ensuring outreach is triggered by predictive member behaviors and needs.
  • Technical Strategy: Develop the long-term roadmap for proactive outreach, balancing the need for high-throughput delivery systems with the flexibility to test new communication styles (including conversational AI).
  • System Reliability: Ensure the reliability and deliverability of member-facing messages, maintaining high standards for latency, observability, and member privacy.
  • Cross-Functional Partnership: Collaborate with Product, Design, and Marketing to translate member engagement goals into scalable technical solutions that improve health outcomes.
  • Operational Excellence: Establish best practices for CI/CD, automated testing, and monitoring for both software services and ML model performance in production.

Benefits

  • Inclusive healthcare and benefits: On top of comprehensive medical, dental, and vision coverage, we offer employees and their family members help with gender-affirming care, tools for family and fertility planning, and travel reimbursements if healthcare isn’t available where you live.
  • Planning for the future: Start saving for the future with our traditional or Roth 401k retirement plan options which include a 2% company match.
  • Modern life stipends: Manage your own learning and development
  • Grow with us through discounted company stock through our ESPP with easy payroll deductions.
