About The Position

As the Engineering Manager, Brain Health Platform, you will lead the development and execution of innovative mental wellness solutions at Hinge Health. You will oversee a multidisciplinary team building agentic AI systems for Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Process-Interpersonal Psychotherapy (PIPT) experiences, while also architecting a unified education service that delivers comprehensive mental health educational content to our members. You will manage a team of engineers who will develop and deploy these brain health solutions at scale. As a key leader, you will collaborate with senior leadership, product management, clinical psychology teams, and coordinate across our three physical locations - San Francisco HQ, Montreal, Canada, and Bangalore, India. Our Brain Health initiatives focus on creating personalized, evidence-based mental wellness experiences that adapt to each member's psychological needs, emotional state, and therapeutic progress. This position is mission-critical for expanding Hinge Health's impact beyond physical therapy into comprehensive mind-body wellness, helping millions achieve better mental health outcomes through innovative AI-powered therapeutic interventions. As a hands-on engineering leader, you're expected to stay close to the technology: understanding your team's full stack, contributing code, and regularly reviewing and merging pull requests (~15% of your time). We enjoy a continuous deployment DevOps culture, and take owner-operator pride in supporting our code in production. Our stack includes Go, gRPC, Temporal, AWS, Kubernetes, Docker, PostgreSQL, Redis, Node.js/TypeScript (NestJS), GraphQL, React, and React Native. Our workflow is trunk-based CI/CD, and our security/compliance posture is at the highest standards of healthcare, including HIPAA, HITRUST, SOC 2, and CCPA.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
  • 5+ years of experience managing teams of 5+ technologists (mix of engineers and ML researchers/scientists)
  • 5+ years of experience building and deploying ML/NLP solutions at scale (thousands to millions of DAU)
  • Experience with conversational AI, dialogue systems, or chatbot development

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree or higher in Machine Learning, Computational Psychology, or a related field
  • 3+ years of experience developing conversational or agentic AI systems using LLMs (e.g., GPT, Claude, LLaMA), including techniques such as prompt engineering, RAG, fine-tuning, or reinforcement learning
  • Proven understanding of responsible AI and ethical model design, particularly within healthcare or sensitive data environments
  • Experience building or deploying digital mental health or therapeutic AI applications, with familiarity in CBT, DBT, or other evidence-based modalities
  • Working knowledge of mental health privacy regulations (HIPAA, state-specific laws) and secure data practices
  • Proficiency in modern development and ML infrastructure (Python, TypeScript, Node.js/NestJS, vector databases, LangChain, Docker, Kubernetes, AWS services like Bedrock/SageMaker, and CI/CD pipelines)

Responsibilities

  • Build next-generation therapeutic AI agents that deliver personalized CBT and PIPT interventions, ensuring clinical efficacy while maintaining engaging, empathetic user experiences.
  • Architect and scale a unified education platform that intelligently serves mental health content, tracks learning progress, and personalizes educational pathways based on member needs and therapeutic goals.
  • Develop the technical strategy for brain health initiatives with your product management partner and clinical stakeholders, ensuring alignment between technological capabilities and therapeutic best practices.
  • Design robust AI architectures for conversational therapy bots that maintain context over multiple sessions, demonstrate emotional intelligence, and adapt therapeutic approaches based on member progress.
  • Establish MLOps practices specific to mental health AI applications, including model monitoring for therapeutic effectiveness, safety guardrails, and compliance with mental health care standards.
  • Drive innovation in natural language processing and affective computing to enhance the therapeutic alliance between AI agents and members.
  • Collaborate with clinical teams to validate AI interventions against evidence-based therapeutic protocols and measure clinical outcomes.
  • Build cross-functional partnerships with content creators, clinical psychologists, and data scientists to create a comprehensive brain health ecosystem.
