About The Position

Join our team as an Engineering Intern with a Mechanical, Electrical, or Controls Engineering focus to support the design, development, and optimization of advanced data center infrastructure critical to xAI’s AI compute systems. This role offers hands-on experience in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment, working alongside world-class engineers on projects that push the boundaries of technology.

Requirements

  • Current enrollment in a Bachelor’s or Master’s program in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field
  • Familiarity with CAD software (e.g., AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Revit) and basic engineering analysis tools
  • Understanding of thermodynamics, fluid mechanics, or heat transfer principles, ideally applied to cooling systems. (mechanical)
  • Understanding of datacenter electrical systems such as transformers, switchgear, generators, UPS systems. (electrical)
  • Strong problem-solving skills and eagerness to learn in a high-impact, technical environment
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team and communicate ideas clearly
  • Passion for xAI’s mission to advance human scientific discovery through AI
  • Ability to lift and move equipment up to 25 pounds during testing or installation tasks
  • Comfort working in a data center environment, including occasional exposure to noise and temperature variations
  • Able to work full time, onsite for a minimum of 12 consecutive weeks beginning in May or June 2026
  • Able to provide own transportation for positions in Memphis, TN and Southaven, MS

Nice To Haves

  • Prior experience with Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) Systems, SQL Databases, Python, or HTML is a plus (controls)

Responsibilities

  • Mechanical Engineering Interns in xAI’s Datacenter will assist in analyzing mechanical systems for data center cooling, including liquid cooling solutions and HVAC systems, to ensure high reliability and efficiency.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate mechanical designs with electrical and thermal systems, ensuring seamless operation of AI compute hardware.
  • This position will have hands-on experience conducting performance testing and data analysis to validate system designs.
  • We invite you to participate in the design process, contributing ideas to optimize space allocation and system scalability.
  • All interns are expected to keep documentation of design processes, test results, and project updates to maintain clear communication with the engineering team.
  • This position will assist in analyzing electrical systems of high-capacity power distribution (PDUs), UPS systems, and cooling units.
  • Hands-on experience assisting to analyze power needs based on current and project IT loads, keeping an eye for efficiency.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate electrical plans with mechanical designs, ensuring seamless operation of AI compute hardware.

  • All interns are expected to keep documentation of design processes, test results, and project updates to maintain clear communication with the engineering team.
  • xAI Instrumentation and Controls (I&C) Interns will receive hands-on experience designing, building and programming system automation that has a tangible impact on xAI's continued success.
  • They will work directly with their mentors and collaborate across teams (Engineering, Operations, etc.) to complete their Intern Project, while gaining exposure to multiple parts of the business in the process.
  • They will be provided the opportunity to work on a wide-variety of I&C related tasks, from hands-on wiring instruments in the field to programming our Ignition Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system.
