About The Position

Eaton Research Labs is seeking a highly motivated Engineering Intern to support hands-on research, development, and prototyping activities in the Hybrid Electronics Lab during Summer 2026. This internship focuses on advanced manufacturing and integration of printed, flexible, and hybrid electronics, supporting early-stage technology development and laboratory-scale builds. The intern will work closely with engineers and researchers on real hardware, gaining practical exposure to micro dispensing, screen printing, SMT assembly, and additive manufacturing platforms in a R&D lab environment.

Requirements

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s/Master's degree in Engineering, or Advanced Manufacturing (Electrical, Mechanical, Materials, Manufacturing, Mechatronics, or related field).
  • Strong interest in hands-on electronics manufacturing or advanced manufacturing processes.
  • Basic understanding of electronics fundamentals (components, PCBs) and laboratory practices.
  • Comfortable working with tools, equipment, and prototypes in a lab environment.
  • Willingness to learn new manufacturing processes and follow documented procedures.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to clearly document work.
  • Ability to work on-site in Southfield, MI for the duration of the internship.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience related to printed electronics, flexible electronics, or hybrid electronics.
  • Exposure to screen printing, SMT assembly, soldering, or electronics fabrication.
  • Familiarity with 3D printing or micro dispensing platforms (e.g., nScrypt).
  • Experience with CAD or ECAD tools (SolidWorks, Fusion 360, KiCad, Altium, or similar).
  • Basic scripting or programming experience (Python, C/C++) is a plus but not required.
  • Comfortable working in a cross-disciplinary, team-oriented lab environment.

Responsibilities

  • Support development and prototyping activities for hybrid and printed electronics demonstrators and test articles.
  • Operate and support micro dispensing-based electronics and 3D printing systems (e.g., nScrypt or similar platforms) under supervision.
  • Assist with screen printing of conductive and functional inks on flexible and rigid substrates.
  • Perform SMT assembly on PCBs and flexible printed electronics, including component placement, reflow, and basic inspection.
  • Support general additive manufacturing tasks, including polymer 3D printing for fixtures, test coupons, and prototypes.
  • Assist with process development, experimentation, and troubleshooting in a laboratory setting.
  • Collect, document, and organize experimental data, build notes, and test results.
  • Maintain lab organization, follow safety procedures, and support proper handling of materials and equipment.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional engineering and manufacturing teams.

Benefits

  • Hands-on experience with emerging hybrid electronics and advanced manufacturing technologies.
  • Practical exposure to lab-scale electronics fabrication, assembly, and testing workflows.
  • Mentorship from experienced engineers and researchers in a corporate R&D environment.
  • Experience translating experimental concepts into repeatable, documented processes.
