About The Position

This Engineering Assistant position for the Goldsboro Construction Office involves performing technical duties and fieldwork related to the inspection, maintenance, and operation of state-maintained roads, bridges, and transportation infrastructure. The role assists higher-level technicians, engineers, and supervisors in various highway maintenance and construction activities. It includes basic technical inspection work and basic surveying to ensure compliance with contract plans, specifications, and standards for highway and bridge construction projects administered by the NCDOT. Work involves on-site inspection, documentation, material testing, and quantity measurements of construction activities to ensure workmanship, materials, and methods comply with state and federal requirements.

Requirements

  • Ability to read, interpret and explain construction plans, contract provisions, specifications, and inspection procedures
  • Ability to take notes
  • Ability to learn computer software such as GIS, Outlook, and Excel
  • Good communicative skills
  • Attention to detail
  • Ability to lift 40 to 50 pounds
  • High school or General Educational Development (GED) diploma; or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Safety toe shoes are required

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in maintaining neat, legible and accurate records and reports, including computer/iPad data entry
  • Knowledge and understanding of basic math concepts, principles and practices
  • Knowledge and understanding of the basic concepts, practices, and theories used in the technical specialty area with limited supervision
