The successful candidate will join the Accuracy Control & Optical Tool group supporting construction at the Groton Shipyard, a dynamic and fast-paced environment requiring prompt and technically sound dimensional control solutions. Accuracy Control Engineers are responsible for all phases of the dimensional control process in shipbuilding and are involved in routine and emergent projects that support manufacturing, assembly and critical alignment. Accuracy Control Engineers complete dimensional validation and tests of components, modules, decks, and hull structure from initial receipt through the final grooming and certification of the submarine. Engineers in the Accuracy Control Department are responsible for ensuring that in-process dimensional control is maintained on components or systems within their purview. As built dimensional data gathered during three-dimensional metrology is processed and presented to develop cut lines, align and install ship components, support machining operations and fabrication work, pair major modules, inform subsequent construction decisions, and complete test forms. This ensures that the ship's components, systems and structures are built and assembled to meet final design specifications and requirements. Engineers in this group work heavily in three-dimensional space and must possess a strong spatial awareness. Knowledge, in the areas of 3-D metrology, structures, precision measurement techniques and application of geometric dimensioning & tolerancing, assists in developing the parameters by which we evaluate the survey data. The role requires the individual to plan work and develop and revise dimensional control documents and procedures. Good interpersonal and communication skills will assist a successful candidate as they will routinely interface with Management, Accuracy Control Engineers, Metrology Technicians, Planning, Engineering groups, Operations groups, Ship’s Management, other shipyards, vendors, and external customers. Engineers and metrology technicians work closely to develop a plan for measurement of the critical features, review site conditions for 3-D surveys, and process as-built data, all while working safely and maintaining a high degree of accuracy. Other valuable skills for this position include problem solving, composition, multi-tasking and project management. The successful candidate will work in an office environment but will need to be present in the production environment and work occasionally off shift to support schedule. The candidate may also be asked to travel occasionally to support offsite work and ship schedules.
