Our Construction Engineering practice helps developers, contractors, designers, fabricators, and erectors efficiently and effectively move projects from initial concept to completion through hands-on involvement in the construction process. Our Chicago office prides itself on providing practical and innovative solutions to real-world engineering challenges. Typical projects include the evaluation of building stability during construction and for temporary loads imposed during construction. This often involves the design of the building and nonbuilding components including the design of shoring, rigging, and the development of unique engineering solutions. The Role We are seeking a talented and driven Engineer or Senior Engineer to join our Chicago office. This individual will become a key contributor within Thornton Tomasetti’s Construction Engineering practice as we continue to expand both our local presence and national footprint. This role offers a unique opportunity to take on meaningful responsibility early, work on high-visibility projects, and grow within a team that is actively shaping the future of our practice. In this position, you will support a diverse portfolio of local and national projects while working closely with clients, project teams, and senior leadership. You will play a direct role in strengthening client relationships, contributing to new business opportunities, and delivering innovative construction engineering solutions. Requirements

  • Degree in structural engineering or related field (Master’s preferred)
  • EIT certification required; actively working toward Professional Engineer (PE) licensure
  • Working knowledge of current construction industry methodologies and best practices
  • 0–3 years of relevant experience preferred (internships and co-ops considered)
  • Familiarity with industry software, including SAP2000, ETABS, RAM, RISA-3D, PCA Software, Revit, AutoCAD, and Bluebeam Revu preferred
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to interact effectively with clients and multidisciplinary teams

Responsibilities

  • Perform structural analysis, design, and detailing for a wide variety of building types and materials in accordance with applicable codes and industry standards
  • Engage directly with clients through site visits and meetings to understand project needs and deliver practical, efficient solutions
  • Prepare and review construction documents utilizing Revit, AutoCAD, and Bluebeam Revu
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external partners to deliver high-quality work on fast-paced project schedules
  • Contribute to solving complex and technically challenging construction engineering problems across a range of project types
  • Support project execution from concept through construction, gaining broad exposure to real-world applications
