About The Position

Under general direction, this role performs difficult and responsible professional engineering work in both field and office settings. The position involves supervising engineering personnel, including consultants, engaged in various engineering projects. Essential functions include assigning and reviewing work, selecting, training, motivating, monitoring, evaluating, and counseling staff. The engineer will analyze workloads and budgets, supervise and review document preparation, and review and analyze bids for conformance with specifications and award approval. Responsibilities also extend to negotiating and modifying contracts, resolving claims and disputes, and supervising and monitoring the inspection of complex engineering projects, including organizing field inspection staff activities. The role involves advising operating staff on water/wastewater treatment goals and process optimization, directing or participating in scientific research projects related to water and wastewater treatments and their environmental effects. The engineer will prepare and review engineering designs, drawings, and specifications, perform and review difficult engineering calculations, and review federal, regional, and local regulations affecting engineering work. Analyzing and solving complex engineering and process-related problems, writing, reviewing, and approving departmental correspondence, reports, and other documents are also key. The position requires conducting meetings and making presentations to staff, committees, approval agencies, clients, and the general public. The incumbent may also act as a project engineer or resident engineer for complex projects and perform other related duties as required.

Requirements

  • Five (5) years of verifiable professional Mechanical Engineering experience, which includes two (2) years experience equivalent to City and County of San Francisco class 5207 Associate Engineer or higher.
  • Possession of a current Certificate of Registration as a Professional Engineer in the State of California in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Candidates licensed in other states who otherwise meet the minimum requirements of this announcement, but do not possess the required California license, may file for this examination, and if successful, will be placed under waiver on the resulting eligible list until the required California license is presented.
  • There is no substitution for the required two years of work experience equivalent to a 5207 Associate Engineer or higher.
  • Some positions may require a valid driver license.

  • Reviewing federal, regional, and local regulations and legislation affecting engineering work.
  • Analyzing and solving complex engineering and process related problems.
  • Writing, reviewing, and approving departmental correspondence, reports and other related documents; conducting meetings and making presentations to staff, committees, approval agencies, clients, and the general public.
  • May act as a project engineer or resident engineer for complex projects.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
