POSITION SUMMARY: The Packaging Engineer II is responsible for assisting in the development of MSD Consumable and Instrument Packaging and leading individual packaging designs. This position will play an integral role in determining requirements and specifications, design of packaging, design of molds/packaging manufacturing, vendor selection, configuration, validation, and integration into MSD manufacturing and inventory systems. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Collaborate with process engineers, product owners, and other engineers to design packaging solutions for use with MSD’s products and manufacturing automation. Participate in the development of process and packaging design requirements and specifications Contribute ideas and expertise to the design of packaging. Lead design of individual packaging projects and integration into MSD processes and automation. Responsible for analyzing data, drawing conclusions, presenting findings and making recommendations on relevant data. Participate in the development and execution of packaging design verification and validation test plans. Participate in the development and implementation of packaging test plans. Generate and implement change orders to promote product design and process improvements. Specific duties may vary depending upon departmental requirements.

  • Bachelor’s degree in Packaging Engineering, Mechanical Engineer, Industrial Engineer, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field required.
  • A minimum of three years of industry relevant packaging experience.
  • Demonstrated success in driving packaging improvement or new design projects to implementation in organization.
  • Demonstrated knowledge areas of Injection Molding, Mold Design, Thermoforming, Bottling, Vialing, Capping, Crimping, and Cardboard Box Design.
  • Proficient Solidworks or other 3D modeling software.
  • Proficient in integrating packaging with automation.
  • Working knowledge of analytical techniques, experimental design and statistical analysis.
  • Excellent analytical and problem solving skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines, manage processes through to completion and coordinate a high level of activity under a variety of conditions and constraints.
  • Demonstrated propensity to be creative, collaborative, proactive, and self-motivated in the execution and completion of assigned accountabilities.
  • Excellent oral, written and interpersonal skills
  • Effectively communicate issues/problems and results that impact timelines, accuracy and reliability of project status
  • Excellent documentation skills, technical writing and presentation skills
  • Demonstrated propensity to be creative, collaborative, proactive, and self-motivated in the execution and completion of assigned accountabilities
  • Excellent organizational, planning, and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple and often changing priorities and issues of varying complexity, while meeting time-sensitive deadlines and deliverables.
  • Advanced degrees or certifications may be applied as industrial experience
  • Experience in scientific or medical packaging strongly preferred including various manufacturing methods such as injection molding, thermoforming, cardboard box engineering in a project driven environment.
  • Experience in and ISO cGMP environment preferred.
  • Working understanding of ISO and/or FDA cGMP standards and their documentation requirements desired
