About The Position

We're currently looking for a Packaging Development Engineer II to join our team in Buffalo, NY. In this role, you will develop, test, implement and manage current business package design, quality, cost and improvements projects. Critical in: delivering improvements to existing packaging as well as testing and validating new packaging for close-in, short term projects. Manage and execute the appropriate level of testing to validate that quality and cost parameters are met.  Complete all packaging specifications, and system updates to assure suppliers deliver the required packaging materials for new and existing products.  Must be self-motivated and approach projects with a passion and sense of urgency for meeting and exceeding customer and team member expectations. This position is based in Buffalo, NY, with expected travel of up to 30%

Requirements

  • Problem Solving- Proactively identifies and understands problems and necessary changes, applies disciplined analysis and engages appropriately to identify solutions and recommend changes.
  • Process/Packaging Qualification & Verification- Ability to qualify process/packaging specifications to deliver production quality, cost and reliability at target line speed (verification); define, execute and analyze a statistically valid testing program to verify product, process, and reliability results (verification); troubleshoot to close gaps in key results (target vs. actual) and identify opportunities for continuous improvement.
  • Packaging Solution identification and analysis - Able to generate and evaluate a broad range of packaging platforms/solutions to achieve product performance targets and evaluate based on costs & quality parameters. Recommend integration of new packaging into manufacturing.
  • Packaging Materials & Technology - Able to apply the latest knowledge of packaging materials and technology to create structural packaging solutions that deliver on targeted performance parameters (quality, costs, etc.). Effectively work with suppliers to develop tooling designs and/or tooling development and materials to meet identified needs.
  • Packaging Specifications and Product Lifecycle System Updates – Ability to quickly and accurately document packaging specifications and all system updates and associated business process work-flows to assure commercialization plans can be executed on time and within budget.
  • Supplier Resources- Effectively partner with packaging material and converting suppliers to develop solutions against key initiatives showing a bias for results.
  • Value Engineering - Organized effort directed at analyzing designed building features, systems, equipment, and material selections for the purpose of achieving essential functions at the lowest life cycle cost consistent with required performance, quality, reliability, and safety.
  • Value Chain Optimization - Understands and works to optimize the entire value chain, relevant functional areas and strategies to deliver appropriate solutions.
  • BS, technical degree (Packaging Engineering preferred) Mechanical or Chemical Engineering are suitable with work experience relevant to the role
  • 2 to 5+ years experience (with food industry experience preferred)
  • Technical packaging material knowledge and/or strong desire to expand deep material knowledge
  • Ability to apply engineering principles and statistics to solve problems and make data-based decisions
  • Ability to lead multiple projects in a cross-functional environment while delivering significant results
  • Solid verbal and written communication skills
  • Experience with computer and information systems or tools including Microsoft Office programs, TOPS or CAPE and electronic specification systems.

Responsibilities

  • Owns the creation and delivery of the packaging solutions for the Speed to Market Natural Work Team New Product and Cost Savings (ROCS) initiatives for the 1-2 year roadmaps for assigned categories.  Sits on and works in close collaboration and coordination with the Natural Work Team to complete projects in an efficient and effective manner.   (50%)
  • Conduct and/or manage line tests and experiments, trials, and analyses to validate packaging specifications.  Provide effective communication and documentation of work including technical plans, experimental reports, financial analysis, and management updates. (10%)
  • Responsible for issuing accurate packaging specifications and the required product systems updates. (10%)
  • Participate in new product / technology/cost savings sessions with key current and potential (known) suppliers. (10%)
  • Work closely with plants to address quality issues as they arise. (10%)
  • Provides input into Operations continuous improvement initiatives. (5%)
  • Builds and leverages of knowledge of packaging materials and processes to advise teams on packaging options and processes as required. (5%)
