About The Position

East Side House (ESH), founded in 1891, is a 501(c) (3) organization that has served the South Bronx since 1963. The organization is dedicated to the community and focused on providing resources and opportunities. East Side House has identified that education is the foundation for economic improvement. Our youth education and technology programs teach skills to allow students and clients to become more self-sufficient and independent. As a community resource, the organization also provides services to families and a growing senior population. In 2020 the organization began food distribution as an additional way to provide economic support to the community we serve. Jobs-Plus is a proven, place-based employment program designed to increase the earnings and employment of workingage residents in designated public housing developments or a cluster of developments. Jobs-Plus - Mill Brook Houses, is operated by East Side House Settlement and based in the Mott Haven neighborhood of the South Bronx. It offers workforce development, financial empowerment services and community building programming to over 3000 residents. The Employment Coordinator will work under the supervision of the Assistant Director. The Employment Coordinator will develop, oversee and manage the Employment Services unit at Jobs-Plus. These services will complement Education Services that are provided onsite. In addition to leading a team of two Career Development Specialists, this role involves working closely with job seekers and the business community. A successful candidate will display the following characteristics: Commitment to mission and goals of East Side House Settlement and Jobs-Plus. Understanding of local industries and employment opportunities, ability to interpret and analyze LMI. Strong management skills, ability to supervise unit of 2 staff. Ability to work cooperatively with peers, and lead colleagues when required. Excellent organization skills, including attention to detail and follow-through. Innovative and engaging ideas for business development and workforce services in community setting that includes virtual and in-person services. Maintain relationship with all stakeholders, including organization leadership, funders, community leaders, etc.

Requirements

  • Minimum Bachelor’s Degree required, and experience managing teams.
  • Minimum for 3-5 years of experience in business development, sales, human resources, job development, recruitment, or marketing.
  • Experience working with community served by East Side House Settlement.
  • Strong computer skills and technological experience including Microsoft Office (Word, Teams, etc.) Google Suite (Google Classroom, Docs, and Sheets) and similar programs
  • COVID Vaccine – As a recipient of Federal, State, and local funds, all staff are expected to be fully vaccinated or able to obtain vaccination before their start date

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and coordinate placement efforts of 2 Career Development Specialists towards the three-year contract goal of 534 job placements.
  • Develop strategies for engaging employers for the purpose of filling open job vacancies, increasing employer partnerships, and retaining existing partnerships (e.g Workforce1 Career centers).
  • Offer both immediate and longer-term employment opportunities to members and develop a comprehensive and robust employer engagement strategy to establish, maintain, and deepen employer relationships over time, to ensure program services meet employer needs, and to prepare clients for high-wage jobs.
  • Ensure employer engagement strategies would be demand-driven, based upon a working knowledge of labor market trends in New York City that are relevant to Jobs-Plus members, using quarterly prospecting plans, which indicate contractor’s target industries and employers for placing members during the upcoming quarter and the placement volume expected by the contractor.
  • Oversee department staff in the areas of coaching members on a variety of work-related topics such as: adjusting to work expectations, taking demands from a supervisor, identifying travel alternatives, securing back-up childcare in the event of a provider emergency, and asking for a raise.
  • Measure training effects on job placement/advancement and use tracking tools to accurately report on outcomes.
  • Represent program at networking events and functions.
  • Evaluate and assess efficiency and effectiveness of employer partnerships.
  • Be willing to become licensed in area of certification as required by program and lead trainings to certify participants.
  • Assist with facilitating inter-agency and inter-program communication, collaborate with other ESH programs.
  • Use diversified marketing strategies to reach a wide range of residents within each development, taking into consideration the varying demographics, needs, work experience, skills, education levels, and career interests of residents. Strategies may include but are not limited to: Posting flyers within and around the development, advertising upcoming events and programs offerings on social media, engaging residents door-to-door, within and around the development/s, attending community events such as Tenants’ Association meetings, family days, and recreational events, Encouraging residents to refer a friend to the program, Using traditional and automated services to contact residents via text, calls, and emails, “Tabling” in front of Jobs-Plus office, outside, or inside of development.
  • Use software such as Salesforce to case note and regularly track member’s progress.
