The Fleet team is responsible for 104 vehicles which includes 10 ambulances, 28 fire response apparatus, and 49 passenger and utility vehicles. The headings in this Job Description are for reference only and shall not affect its interpretation. Position Summary: Under the direction of the Fleet Shop Supervisor, the EVT performs maintenance, diagnostics, and repair of automotive, firefighting apparatus, and ambulance equipment to ensure operational readiness and compliance with safety standards. EVT Level I focuses on preventive maintenance and routine repairs, while EVT Level II performs advanced diagnostics, complex repairs, and serves as a technical resource for others. Distinguishing Characteristics: EVT I: Entry-level or intermediate technician responsible for scheduled preventive maintenance, basic diagnostics, and routine repairs under established guidelines. EVT II: Advanced technician with specialized expertise in complex diagnostics, technical troubleshooting, and repair of intricate systems. May assist with training and mentoring of EVT I.

Requirements

  • Possess a high school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Possess and maintain a valid unrestricted state issued driver's license and safe driving record. State of Colorado license required within 60 days of hire
  • Minimum of two (2) years documented work experience of automotive or diesel diagnosis and repair.
  • Possess or obtain within two (2) years of hire and maintain an EVT Fire Apparatus Technician Level I Certification.
  • Possess or obtain within two (2) years of hire and maintain an EVT Ambulance Technician Level I Certification.
  • Must possess personal hand tools necessary to perform duties.
  • All EVT I requirements plus:
  • Minimum of four (4) years documented work experience of automotive or diesel repair that includes repair and maintenance of emergency vehicles (fire apparatus and ambulance), or a combination of education, certification, and experience to successfully perform the duties of the position.
  • Possess or obtain within two (2) years of hire and maintain an EVT Fire Apparatus Technician Level II Certification.
  • Possess or obtain within two (2) years of hire and maintain an EVT Ambulance Technician Level II Certification.
  • Basic mechanical and electrical knowledge; ability to follow procedures and safety standards.
  • Ability to safely drive fire apparatus and other vehicles for diagnostic testing, repair verification, and equipment transport.
  • Basic ability to diagnose and repair gasoline and diesel-powered internal combustion engines.
  • Ability to assist with diagnosis and repair of electrical, hydraulic, water pumps, valves, foam systems, and generators in accordance with manufacturer instructions.
  • Knowledge of specialized tools, equipment, and practices used in fire apparatus maintenance and repair.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write clear and concise correspondence.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively work with District members and third-party providers.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English at a level necessary to perform job duties.
  • Advanced diagnostic skills; ability to troubleshoot complex systems; leadership in technical guidance.
  • Meet all EVT I KSAs plus:
  • Advanced ability to diagnose and repair gasoline and diesel-powered internal combustion engines.
  • Advanced ability to diagnose and repair electrical, hydraulic systems, water pumps, valves, foam systems, and generators in accordance with manufacturer specifications.
  • In-depth knowledge of specialized tools, equipment, and practices used for major fire apparatus maintenance and complex repairs.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals, schematics, and complex instructions.
  • Ability to prepare clear and accurate documentation of repairs and maintenance.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with District members and third-party providers.
  • Ability to read, write, speak, and understand English at a level necessary to perform job duties.

Responsibilities

  • Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge and adherence to District rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Perform preventive maintenance on emergency response and support vehicles according to schedule.
  • Document all maintenance and repairs in the district’s electronic vehicle maintenance system.
  • Occasionally respond to after-hours emergency calls for apparatus and equipment repairs.
  • Assist with annual testing programs for fire pumps, aerial and ground ladders, and NFPA compliance.
  • Operate mobile maintenance vehicle for field repairs and preventive maintenance.
  • Drive apparatus/vehicles for diagnostics, post-repair testing, and vendor transport.
  • Maintain a clean and safe shop and work area.
  • Maintain inventory and track parts usage accurately.
  • Attend meetings and trainings as required; maintain certifications and stay current with NFPA and industry standards.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Perform routine repairs as directed by the Fleet Shop Supervisor.
  • Assist with diagnosis and repair of fleet vehicles and systems.
  • Diagnose and repair District fleet vehicles, including fire apparatus and support vehicles, using knowledge of automotive systems (hydraulics, brakes, engines, electrical systems, etc.).
  • Diagnose and repair electrical, hydraulic, and water pump systems, foam systems, and generators.
  • Train firefighter-engineers in minor equipment repair and maintenance.
