Position Summary : The Emergency Department Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) is responsible for assisting the registered nurse, physician assistant or physician with simple procedures. A staff EMT functions under the direction of a Registered Nurse. EMT provides care for infant (0-1 year of age), pediatric (1-13 years of age) and adult (14 years of age and older) populations.

Requirements

  • Must be able to communicate effectively in oral and written form in English.
  • Must be able to meet the physical demands of the job (light to heavy lifting and/or pushing of patients or equipment).
  • High school diploma or GED, required.
  • One of the following is required upon hire effective 2/4/2020: Current San Diego County EMT certificate or Current Paramedic certificate.
  • Current BLS certification, required upon hire; American Heart Association Healthcare Provider.
  • NVCI certification, required within 90 days of hire or transfer.
  • Maintain an annual minimum of 10 related to work CEUs from TCMC, or other source, in lieu of maintaining CNA certification. Applies only to employees with CNA certifications who were hired or transferred to this job prior to 2/4/2020.
  • Each new hire candidate who is offered employment must pass a physical evaluation, urine drug screen and pre-employment background checks before starting work.
  • To protect the health of patients and staff, and to comply with the new State of California mandates, all job offers are contingent on the successful engagement in the TCMC COVID-19 vaccination program (fully vaccinated with documented proof or approved exception/deferral.)

Nice To Haves

  • Computer skills preferred.
  • 2 years experience working in an emergency department preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains a safe, clean working environment, including unit based safety and infection control requirements.
  • Assists RNs, PAs or physicians with simple procedures/Patient care.
  • Provides or assists with splinting, casting, immobilizing of patient extremities.
  • Assists with transporting patients as needed to and from the ED.
  • Completes daily unit equipment checks and logs to meet JCAHO/DHS requirements.
  • Assists with inventory, stocking, and ordering of supplies and equipment (voluntary).
