About The Position

An Emergency Department (ED) Technician provides crucial, direct support to clinical staff up to their licensure level (EMT-B, AEMT, Paramedic and LNA) in fast-paced emergency settings. Key responsibilities include taking vital signs, performing EKGs, drawing blood, splinting injuries, assisting with procedures, and managing patient transport, all while maintaining clean, stocked rooms.

Requirements

  • High School Graduate.
  • Completion of educational program required for licensure or certification.
  • Current Healthcare CPR Certification required
  • Vermont/National EMT certification
  • Valid Vermont LNA certification required.

Nice To Haves

  • 2 or more years of EMS experience preferred.
  • Basic EMT/ Advance EMT/ Paramedic levels
  • Certified LNA

Responsibilities

  • Obtaining and recording vital signs (temperature, pulse, blood pressure, oxygen saturation).
  • Performing diagnostic tests such as 12-lead EKGs and point-of-care testing (e.g., blood glucose levels).
  • Drawing blood (phlebotomy) and collecting other laboratory specimens (urine, stool, sputum).
  • Monitoring patients and reporting any significant changes in patient status.
  • Identifies patients accurately before starting procedures/ providing services.
  • Assisting with trauma resuscitation, CPR, and emergency airway procedures.
  • Performing basic wound care, including irrigation, dressing changes, and assisting with sutures or staples.
  • Applying orthopedic splints, slings, and immobilizers; fitting patients for crutches or canes.
  • Transporting patients within the hospital for tests or admissions.
  • Stocking treatment rooms and procedure carts with medical supplies.
  • Maintaining a clean, safe environment by changing linens and sanitizing equipment.
  • Answering patient call lights and assisting with basic hygiene or mobility needs.
  • Answers the telephone in a professional manner and assists with the unit coordinator’s duties.
  • Consistently complies with all policies, procedures, and regulations related to patient safety, professional ethics, infection control, age-specific care, and patient/family education.
  • Actively engages in quality and performance improvement initiatives to enhance patient outcomes and care delivery.
  • Adheres to hospital policy by accurately and continuously documenting all aspects of patient care in the electronic medical record, while integrating effective pain management principles into care delivery.
  • Reports incidents, as outlined per policy including potential errors and near misses.
  • Collaborates with members of the healthcare team to ensure patients are informed and actively involved in decisions regarding their care and treatment.
  • Communicates effectively with staff across departments to address patient needs and identify potential safety concerns.
  • Keeps patients and families informed about any delays in care in a timely and compassionate manner.
  • Conducts regular rounding on patients within the department to promote safety and ensure their needs are consistently met.
