The Emergency Preparedness Coordinator supports the implementation and coordination of the University’s emergency preparedness, response, and recovery activities for campus critical incidents and emergencies such as infectious disease outbreaks, natural and technological hazards, and human-caused incidents that may impact University operations, students, employees, and designated business partners. The position will ensure the emergency action plans and incident specific annexes are in alignment for response and recovery efficiency. This entry-level position reports directly Emergency Preparedness Director and works under the guidance of senior emergency preparedness staff, including the Emergency Preparedness Planner, to assist with emergency planning implementation, training and exercises, operational coordination, documentation, and incident support activities.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in emergency management, public administration, business management, or related field preferred. Two years of relevant professional experience may be substituted for degree requirement.
  • Minimum of one year of related experience in emergency preparedness, emergency management, public safety or law enforcement, or incident management team (IMT).
  • Adult CPR with First Aid and Automatic External Defibrillation (AED) certification, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of employment.
  • Must respond to emergencies on an on-call 24/7 basis.
  • Must work extended hours during emergency situations.
  • In the event of evacuation, the incumbent may be required to remain to perform needed services.
  • Must have valid current Arizona’s driver license and clean driving record.
  • Must pass a pre-employment background investigation, including fingerprinting.

Responsibilities

  • Assists staff with the implementation and coordination of the University’s Emergency Preparedness Program, including emergency plans, procedures, training, exercises, emergency support functions, and after-action activities.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of goals, objectives, policies, and priorities for emergency programs; recommends and administers policies and procedures; oversees employee workplan and goals
  • Aides with the maintenance and distribution of emergency preparedness plans, annexes, standard operating procedures (SOPs), checklists, and job aids.
  • Assists the implementation actions of approved emergency preparedness policies, procedures, exercises, and trainings.
  • Conduct research, document and provide updates on industry best practice and real-world incidents to assist in maintaining highly effective and efficient emergency preparedness plans.
  • Liaise with other departments to improve and continuously monitor the efficiency and effectiveness of assigned programs, service delivery methods, and procedures; assess and monitor workload and administrative and support systems; identify opportunities for improvement and recommends accordingly.
  • Serve as coordinator for specific emergency preparedness emergency action plan (EAP) programs such as EMS, EAP evacuation map, special event, residence life, and athletic training.
  • Supports the conduct of Threat and Hazard Identification and Risk Assessment (THIRA) or Hazard Vulnerability Assessment (HVA).
  • Act as a liaison, under supervision, with other GCU and GCE Departments and Programs for ensuring collaboration, understanding, and acceptance of emergency response roles and responsibilities.
  • Support the development, maintenance, and training of GCU’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC) are current, operational; maintains ability to activate the Coordination Center at all levels for incidents and planned events; acts as a technical resource and advisor throughout the emergency.
  • Supports EOC activations and ensures efficient in the event of an emergency, disaster, or planned event; coordinates all notifications during activation and deactivation of the EOC
  • Ability to learn complex emergency management frameworks and apply them to daily organizational tasks.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to take direction from multiple SMEs and prioritize tasks effectively.
  • Exceptional attention to detail when tracking technical data or managing sensitive documentation.
  • Proactive communicator who is comfortable asking clarifying questions to ensure accuracy in a fast-paced environment.
