POSITION SUMMARY The Emergency Department Unit Based Educator is an EAMC bedside nurse who has experience working in one of EAMC’s emergency departments (Main ED, Lanier ED, or FED) and is up to date in clinical expertise. The Emergency Department Unit Based Educator role is based on three spheres of influence: nurse/nursing, patient/client, and system/organization. Spending most time at the department level, the Emergency Department Unit Based Educator acts as a resource to employees and leadership to facilitate safe, therapeutic care in a holistic and systematic manner to the patient population. Demonstrates commitment to the organization’s strategic plan and supports new, department-specific and organization-wide initiatives by providing staff continuing education, orientation, and individual staff development. Under the supervision of the Education Manager, and in collaboration with staff, leadership, and other members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team, the Emergency Department Unit Based Educator performs continuous assessment of educational needs, and fosters participation, involvement, and cooperation among staff and management team for education programs. Conducts evidence-based research and provides training on new initiatives, re-education or follow-up education, and/or product/equipment training; identifies training needs; and performs assessment of knowledge application at the department level. Uses available resources and various instructional approaches to develop and implement training programs based on hospital protocols, policies and procedures, and regulatory standards to facilitate learning and competence. Evaluates the effectiveness of educational programs and provides appropriate documentation of education activities. Serves as a mentor to the Nurse Residents, early adopters/supusers for projects/initiatives, subject matter experts for training materials, programs and/or committees, competency validators, and education representative for Unit Council. Ensures high quality, compassionate healthcare through continued personal, professional development and innovative thinking. Participates in Education Department bi-annual Education Department Professional Development Presentations for Educator Role Development (present and learn), weekly huddles, and monthly Progress to Goals meetings, Functions as a professional role model for bedside staff and maintains frequent communication with bedside staff on educational opportunities.
