About The Position

As an Estimator, you will spearhead preparing, reviewing, and presenting discipline estimates for specific project proposals within the Water/Wastewater market. In this pivotal role, you will provide expert estimating assistance and guidance to project teams, develop conceptual estimates, and perform comprehensive cost analyses. You will be responsible for mentoring and developing discipline/service estimators, maintaining and updating historical databases, and refining departmental procedures. Additionally, you will offer strategic direction on project/program-level tasks, ensuring accuracy and efficiency in all estimating activities. MEC-NY is an electrical contractor that focuses primarily on the electrical side of Kiewit's Eastern District. Kiewit's Eastern District specializes in challenging heavy civil construction projects throughout the Northeast. We are leaders in bridge, transit, foundation, tunnel, and water/wastewater construction while specializing in cast-in-place concrete, structural steel erection, earthwork, pile driving, and caissons. Kiewit's Eastern District also has a large amount of work in the energy/power sector in various northeast locations. With our experienced and dedicated employees, extensive resources and in-depth market knowledge, the Eastern District can handle projects of any size. This position will be based out of our Woodcliff Lake, NJ office.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate degree in construction management, civil engineering, architecture, or a related field.
  • 2 - 5 years of estimating experience in the heavy civil construction industry.
  • Strong interest in preconstruction and estimating.
  • Familiarity with conceptual, hard bid, and self-perform estimating.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Must be detail-oriented and technically proficient with effective communication skills.
  • A strong work ethic is essential.
  • Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Proficient in using computers and experienced with Microsoft Office, On Screen Takeoff, Hard Dollar, Timberline, MC2, or other estimating software programs.
  • Interest in professional development and continued education.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with Hard Dollar Estimating Software, LEED AP distinction, and BIM experience is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Reviewing, analyzing and interpreting Contract Documents (specifications, drawings, and reference information) to develop detailed, comprehensive cost estimates for heavy civil construction projects. Also able to make assumptions based on experience with detailed plans are not provided and front end estimating is performed based on conceptual level designs.
  • Able to perform accurate quantity takeoffs for earthwork, concrete work, and piping and drainage.
  • Identifying bid qualifications, risks, and assumptions along with quantities and pricing
  • Ensuring estimates and proposals are performed in accordance with company practices and standards.
  • Participating in estimate reviews and presentations to estimate lead and department leads.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with subcontractors and suppliers throughout the pre-bid process, including solicitation of bids and constructability input.
  • Manage comparisons between self-perform estimates and subcontractor quotes.
  • Ability to Analyze Subcontractor and Material Quotes for responsiveness to the Estimate and Project requirements
  • Prequalification and Proposal assistance functions
  • Preparing value engineering solutions; including cost, schedule, and Owner benefits.
  • Preparing responses to Request for Qualifications (RFQ's) and Request for Proposals (RFP's).
  • Providing rough order of magnitude (ROM) estimates and phasing schedules.
