About The Position

The Education Specialist conducts individual and group sessions for academic, college, career and personal guidance. Works with veterans in target area, appropriate college faculty/staff, institutions of higher education, financial aid, FASFA preparation, area agencies serving veterans and area TRIO programs to facilitate services and activities with an emphasis on college readiness that lead to enrollment into postsecondary entrance. Maintains accurate records concerning program activities and student academic progress.

Requirements

  • Skill working with students who are first-generation, low-income and/or students with disabilities.
  • Ability to adhere to federal and College policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of multi-cultural differences and challenges and ability to effectively work and interact with various cultures.
  • Knowledge of MS Office software and Windows systems.
  • Proficient planning and organizational skills; managing and prioritizing multiple tasks.
  • Ability to pay close attention to detail.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including excellent grammar, spelling and editing skills.
  • Skilled in human relations and diplomacy.
  • Ability to communicate with people of all ages.
  • Ability to understand parental concerns for students.
  • Ability to evaluate programs and participants.
  • Ability to demonstrate cooperative and professional demeanor, displaying patience and understanding in stressful situations.
  • Ability to work successfully with minimal supervision in a team-oriented environment.
  • Ability to use various office equipment including, but not limited to: computer, telephone, copier, scanner, and fax machine.
  • Ability to travel throughout the Omaha community to target high school and community agencies.
  • Ability to effectively work and interact with various cultures and ethnicities.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Psychology, Sociology, Education or related field.
  • Two (2) years of full-time experience in human services, a secondary or post-secondary educational environment.
  • At least one year experience working with at-risk students, adults or veterans in counseling or advising capacity required.
  • Valid driver’s license and insurability to drive College vehicles.
  • Must pass background check.

Nice To Haves

  • Prefer experience in federal education programs, transfer counseling, and working with educationally disadvantaged students.
  • Experience in community college or a technical college preferred.
  • Background similar to the target population preferred.
  • Equivalent combination of education and/or work experience considered.

Responsibilities

  • Provides academic support services and assessments to veteran participants in the target area.
  • Plans and implements educational / cultural enrichment activities.
  • Works with a team to develop individualized educational plans for participants to meet their academic goals, including remedial and mandatory core courses.
  • Provides support for participants in academic, career, social and personal areas.
  • This position is responsible for recruiting students from the projects’ target area and tracking progress for an assigned group of students.
  • Assesses each participant’s academic skills.
  • Monitors and follows-up participant’s academic progress.
  • Maintains accurate records concerning program activities and student academic progress.
  • Consistently and dependably attends work, activities, and functions as scheduled or assigned.
